Yamaha PSR 293 - How To Get Dual Voice Feature To Work

I have a Yamaha PSR 293. Sometimes the Dual Voice feature works for me and sometimes it doesn’t. Following what I THINK Is the instruction in the owners manual, I first find the voice that I want to pair with a different voice then I hit the dual key, and hold it down for more than a second and dial in the second voice that I want to sound along with the first. My results are spotty. Sometimes it works like a charm, and sometimes it does not. Is my approach wrong?
