MY MAC cannot find the SMF files saved from my yamaha ypg 525-HELP?

by l.g.

i am trying to save a song from my YPG 525 to a flash drive to put into the computer. the song is definitely on the flash drive, as it shows up as "Song 036" and can be played back in the keyboard. but when i place the flash drive in the computer's USB port, the MAC (an iMac w/ intel processor), the computer thinks the drive is empty. speaking of drives, it is driving me crazy. it seems Yamaha offers full support for PC users but not MAC users. any help would be very much appreciated.

You need to use a computer USB to Midi
by: Anonymous

USB to Midi device will not work, you need to go into a computer USB port form the YPG keyboards to have access to Midi to and from your computer and YPG keyboard, it will then work just like a normal Midi keyboard. But just using a USB to Midi converter on the YPG keyboard itself will not work and turn it into a full Midi keyboard sorry, crappy Yamaha deletion of a absolutely necessary feature.

I do not know why Yamaha of all companies would do this, I spent close to $700 on my YPG-625 and at this price it should come with Midi IN/OUT ports. Even the Yamaha P-70 piano keyboard has Midi IN/OUT ports, what gives Yamaha ??? Get with it !!! People still need to use Midi from time to time and this should not be an option or deleted !!! Yamaha should give us YPG customers a USB to Midi device that works without a computer for the YPG keyboards, come on!!!

Yamaha YPG SERIES NOT MIDI
by: Anonymous

The reason for your problem is that the YPG SERIES ARE NOT MIDI KEYBOARDS I have the same problem trying to add a midi module. I QUESS THATS WHY WE PAID LESS MONEY THAN HIGHER END MODELS. I seen severval posts asking the same question with no reponses from anybody. Since I made the dumb mistake assuming that all today's keyboards are midi at the time of purchase, I'm now looking for that magic box that will convert the keyboard to midi. PERHAPS IT CAN BE DONE THROUGH A COMPUTER. I'm still researching this, but losing hope. Hopefully someone out ther knows the answer and will respond

Blank Screen
by: Kevi Keys

Hi Mad_Dog,,, I have the exact problem with my keyboard. I've had it worked on several times,,, and it doesn't seem to fix the problem as of yet. it works for about "maybe" 5 mins,,, or until I push 1 button to fill in a beat,,, then it goes all crappy again. I'm still looking into it and have now memorized lots of the styles and sounds. Lol. I didn't really have much of a choice. If you have a Yamaha outlet in your area/town,,, ask them how to fix your screen. Trust me,,, it is well worth it once it's fixed properly!!!

Boycott The Yamaha Crooks!
by: Robert

My Ypg525 is doing the same thing. After about 2 years of light use, the screen started appearing half legible and half with verticle lines. Then it went out completely....it still lights up but displays nothing.

This is a quality issue...a design issue. Yamaha did not spec out this screen properly and that is why everyone is having this problem. This is a part that costs Yamaha maybe $20-30. Yamaha won't fix the problem but will sell you a replacement for $180.00...which is almost 1/2 of what I paid for this keyboard.

I urge all of you to join me in boycotting Yamaha products. I will never buy a Yamaha product ever again. I like Yamaha products but very much dislike that they are not honoring or fixing their screw up.

Yet another Yamaha YPG-525 owner with a half-dead LCD screen.
by: Wronged Musician

Subject says it all. Still can't find a reasonably priced replacement on the net. An LCD screen with these specifications should cost at MOST retail $20, even if manufactured for a modest sized OEM order. This is outdated LCD tech, but not so outdated that parts or manufacturing setup ought to be an issue.

Yamaha just plain isn't supporting their product. With the LCD issues, if it were a car they'd be forced to issue a recall. Free repair in that instance.

They sold me a new replacement for a discount price

But it works fine now.

I found the service manual download link immediately this evening (you can too) and here it is:
http://elektrotanya.com/yamaha_dgx-620_ypg-625.pdf/download.html

If anyone knows the part number of the substitute display, please post it. I looked at the youtube video showing all the wires and the disasseblmed keyboard and it did not scare me. Taking out 125 screws did however.

Thanks.

Blank .Half Screen Solution.
by: Gadget Girl

Yamaha is no support. It started two years after purchase. The blank/line/half screen happens when my keyboard is off for a few days. If I turn it on every day. even for a short time, the screen is fine. When I forget, the blank or half or lines screen show up, but disappears after a short while. I'll settle for that rather than rent a car or van to haul this huge thing to a repair shop. But I won't buy another Yamaha keyboard again, that's for sure.

Great work!
by: Rafaelias

This message attempt to answer to an anonimous guest: In my case, I am living in the Dominican Republic, here is almost difficult to find some parts like ones found in DigiKey to order. So I get an old damaged CD-ROM diver, and pull out the flat cable and the two female connectors from the control board to the lenses (reader). There are 17 pins, so I had to leave 3 pins not connected. I desolded the two connectors and solded each wire as Ajeismo posted. A resisttor and potentiometer also were solded. If you have some skills in electronics, go ahead, you can do it!

More info about LCD
by: Rafaelias

Today, I was searching on ebay and found a seller that claims for sale a MM6 LCD replacement. Is the same Powertip wich AJEISMO (from Tijuana) mentioned. Now they have a solution (as pictured an MM6), but the price was go up to more than $80!. Two black vertical lines in both sides due the thinny pixel´s width.
The true, I think it need some changes because the lines of the new LCD are not in the same order than the Yamaha´s LCD cable. If anyone reach that info (wich lines to change)... May we get a solution for it. I suppouse I will do that.

Lets continue looking a light at the end of the tunnel... Anyway, it may be the most approximate possibility fo solve at a low and just cost.

MM6 LCD Mod
by: AEJIMSO

I've also have an LCD problem although I have no reason to complain at least with Yamaha's customer Service, since I bought my MM6 Used, I am an Electronics Enthusiast more than a musician so I decided to search for a general purpose LCD to replace the yamaha's defective OEM LCD (Around $200.00) , so far the cheapest option is to buy the Powertip 320 X 240 LCD module that a guy sells For $25 a piece on ebay, there are two options LISTED you should go with the one that has no Controller (without the Epson Chip) this module has the same resolution as the original but it is slighly smaller because the Dots are smaller i believe 0.24 mm Vs 0.27 the Elec eltek lcd that yamaha Uses. anyway there are no modifications to be made on the keybord itself other than accomodate the smaller LCD module inside the Front cover, the major work is to modify the Flat ribbon cable to match the appropriate pins coming from the keyboards main board, If I have time i will post some more details on this Mod. Greetings from Tijuana Mexico.

LCD problem with Yamaha YPG-635 / DGX-630 and MM6
by: Rafaelias

Dear Everybody!

The LCD module used by Yamaha in these keyboards uses a matrix of 320 x 240 pixels, it is from china and it have a poor construction, made of a kind of conductive glue instead a connector for feeding columns of the matrix. I tryed repair luckly my MM6 only for the first time and a couple of days I was one step back. The goal is to find any manufacturer that provides the same blue LCD module ready sustitute it. Anyone can dissasemble the unit and carefully make the change. If Yamaha sell that part, it must cost no more than $60 (since is so simple, it doesn have more than 1 chip and a few SMD resistors and capacitors for controlling the contrast). Please, if they do, I want one!

Dear "Mad Doctor": Your problem is one frequently mentioned in this Forum. I have looked into it at some length, and unfortunately any DIY repair is out of the question. I understand your feelings about Yamaha, but the only solution
short of writing off your unit (and surely you do not want to do that) seems to be to have Yamaha repair the Display. The cost of repair can be high, but try to look at it as the price to pay for continuing to enjoy playing. Sorry for the lousy message, Good luck.

See Yamaha's List of Compatible Flash Drives
by: Anonymous

Yamaha's website has a list of compatible flash drives that will work with your particular portable grand. Take a look at the list of compatible usb drives located at:
http://music.yamaha.com/products/downloads.html?productId=792247&hierarchy_id=20024_20023_16277.
Selecting a usb drive that is shown to be compatible might help with your problem. If you find that you can't access the site location directly using the above url, go to the Yamaha site, select portable grands, then your model, then support, then downloads. Scrolling down quite a bit, you should find a download of compatible usb flash drives. Hope this helps.

Hi Hetta: I had the same experience with a Lexar 4 gb usb flash drive. Nothing I did would get me past the "no files found" message. Finally, having read that the YPG 535 will not work with certain USB flash drives, I pulled out a 2 gb Kingston that had some data on it which I backed up on another drive. I plugged in the Kingston which the 535 recognized, formatted it, and all was right with the world.

Same thing
by: Anonymous

I have been having screen problems as well, but mine seem more permanent. Ever since the past two weeks, having the keyboard only two years, a number of pixels have burnt out and the number increases each day. I now have a roughly 1 sq. cm sized blotch of white on the top right portion of my screen. I have read other forums about this and everything leads to a screen replacement. I looked online and saw that a screen would cost me somewhere around $170!!! So, I am debating wether to buy a new piano, or replace the screen, because I have no knowledge of any other problems that may occur that would cost even more to repair. I don't want to have to spend over $1,500 on fixing a keyboard, that is only worth about $400-$500 in the current state it is in. Good luck with yours!!

YPG 525 Display Problem
by: Alfred

Dear Randy: IF you are using a Power Adaptor, it could be that it's Output has deteriorated, feeding less current to the Keyboard. Try replacing the adaptor. On the other hand, a Display can misbehave due to an internal circuit problem, which is more serious and definitely not a DIY project. I suggest that if the first recommendation does not correct the problem, you contact Yamaha Canada Music Ltd.at either
135 Milner Ave., Scarborough, Ontario, M1S 3R1, Canada
Tel: (1) 416-298-1311 Fax: (1) 416-292-0732.
or
750 Chester Road, New Westminster, British Columbia V3M 6J1, Canada
Tel: (1) 604-520-1335 Fax: (1) 604-520-7058
.......give full details, (model, serial number, problem, etc.). Hope this info helps. Thank you for contacting us, and please come back with questions/comments any time. You are always welcome here. Keep well.

I'm having trouble with the display on my yamaha ypg 525 keyboard?

by Robert Christopulos
(Salt Lake City, Utah, USA)

The screen display on my YPG525 appears to be having trouble with backlighting. At one time it was fine, but now the lighting seems to be falling off severely. . The contrast adjustment knob appears to work just fine.

I've not opened the keyboard up but since it is out of warrantee now I'm severely tempted. I have some electronics experience. Is it possible for me to adjust the lighting, and if so, where would I find the proper adjuster inside the case?

I hope to be able to do this as cheaply as I can, but if I have to get it repaired professionally, about how much should this cost me?

Pinout for 14P connector -- connection to LCD module
by: Ben

This is the pinout for the 14P connector from the mainboard-LCD controller to the LCD module.
Pin 1 - first line signal
Pin 2 - latch pulse
Pin 3 - shift clock
Pin 4 - AC frame signal
Pin 5 - VDD
Pin 6 - VSS
Pin 7 - VEE
Pin 8 - D0 (data 0)
Pin 9 - D1 (data 1)
Pin 10 - D2 (data 2)
Pin 11 - D3 (data 3)
Pin 12 - DISPOFF
Pin 13 - Not connected
Pin 14 - Not connected

The 2-wire coming from the 5V regulator for the backlight has the following information:
Pin 1 - 5V (output from regulator is loaded with 4 x 100 ohm resistors in parallel -- equivalent resistance of 25 ohms)
Pin 2 - Gnd

You will need to look for a 320 x 240 monochrome LCD and match the pin. Make sure you are within the specifications for the backlight for a direct swap. There are a few options for backlights out there - CCFL, LED, etc. Unless you plan on heavily modifying your keyboard, I'd suggest you stick within the specs.

Another option is that if you can find an LCD without backlight option, you can salvage the backlight from your keyboard. However, you will have to probably rig some way to fit the backlight in unless you have exact dimensions for the tabs to clamp the LCD on.

At this stage I'm still looking for a suitable replacement for the LCD component.

Good luck.

Dead screen - working on a repair
by: Ben

My screen has died too. The right side failed for no apparent reason. Started with vertical lines and then just went blank.

I've been reading the comments up above and I have been trying to find a replacement screen. Refusing to go with the Yamaha one for $150. Still working on the pin-outs of the the board. Once I figure it out, I'll post it on here. Hang in there folks.

Yeah my screen died too
by: Gary Trieste

It apparently is a common problem with this keyboard.
The unit works otherwise, but without the display the functionality is severely diminished.
Despite one of the previous comments, if you have any 'handy' ability, it can be a DIY project, almost any other option is impractical.
The biggest problem is finding a replacement LCD screen that doesn't cost too much.
I have not been able to find the most generic version of the screen, something like a PowerTip 320x240, but the replacement model # is readily available, as are more recent drop in replacements.
The repair manual states the part # as WG299100
but more recent replacement part #s are:
WN744800 and WK479800 and WU967500.
Yamaha's retail price is some crazy $ like $200, but I have seen it sold for as low as $85.
If I see for it sale for $50 or less anywhere I will buy it right then.
The replacement procedure is straightforward but tedious, and will a couple caveats about connections etc.
My unit is great, and I would not want to lose it just because of this faulty part. Yamaha should really make the part available free or low cost on a recall type basis.

ypg 525 display problem
by: bob

I also have a problem with the display just lighting up but not displaying any characters. Yes I.did check the contrast adjustment and that is not the problem. The issue is a poor quality display unit as evidenced by the.very high.failure rate. It is upsetting that Yamaha has not offered any.assistance in fixing this.issue. Sadly this says a lot about the company's true concern for their customers and products.
Very upsetting!

Yamaha YPG 525 Display
by: Alfred

Dear Bob: Sometimes it takes an independent view point "to see where the trees are !". My comment about the lamp was something you overlooked. I've also learned something from you. I never thought static Electricity had enough power to be lethal! I will keep this in mind. Finally, weigh the cost of repair by at least two qualified (preferably by Yamaha) technicians in your area. Unless a replacement of the LCD Assembly is required, it may be the way to go. Also, thanks for the feedback. Just do it again to keep all members aware of your final action. Good luck and keep well.

Thanks so much
by: Bob Christopulos

I so appreciate what you wrote. At least it validated what I have brrn thinking.

That the lamp might be going out was also helpful. Honestly I hadn't given any thought to that.

Your comment regarding static electricity was much appreciated as I almost lost my life to a static discharge about 50 years ago.

Anyway, I'll let you know what I find. I really don't want to replace my keyboard unless Yammie comes out with something like a T3 with 88 keys and is about as portable as my YPG525.

Thanks again.

Yamaha YPG 525 Display
by: Alfred

Dear Robert: I am not familiar with your unit, but here are some points you might want to consider:
1) Age of unit and corresponding wear & tear. The lamp itself may be slowly burning out.
2) Read Mantius', Rector' and my comments found on main page of the Q & A title to the left of this message.
3) Your knowledge of Electronics is respected, but in the process of DIY repair, know your limitations and when to quit. Be sure to wear an anti-static transfer Wrist Strap. You will be working around staic-sensitive components in the circuit.
4) The adjuster is probably a Pot located close to the LCD Assembly.
5) You may have to google Yamaha's main page and thread your way to their Parts Dept. for the parts you eventually need to buy.
6) Get at least three estimates from local QUALIFIED REPAIR TECHS as to charges for repair so you can decide what to do.
7) As I said I do not know your unit and therefore cannot guide you as to the how to open it. Perhaps some other member does and will
make comment.
Finally, regardless of your decision, it will be a helpful gesture if you posted a follow-up message in this Forum so we can all learn from your experience. Thank you and good luck.
