Yamaha PSR-240 keyboard - no sound

by Jason

I have the yamaha PSR-240 keyboard and although the power is on, no sound is playing, are the speakers broken or what could be a possible reason for having no sound?

PSR-240
by: Inkuboi

PSR-240 lcd display light comes on but none of the keys or buttons respond. When I simultaneously press the power button and the keys I get brief sounds and then nothing. Seems like a faulty connection somewhere on one of the boards?
How can I determine this using a service repair manual to diagnose so that I may be able to replace any faulty components?

Yamaha P95 or P85 piano sound solution
by: Anonymous

i see people here complaining about digital pianos no sound on Yamaha but power led is on.

On the Yamaha P95 or P85 its is 9 out of 10 times the c216 and c217 capacitors that are blown on the internal AM card. desolder the capacitors and replace with new ones ..100 uF 16 volts
it is very cheap

Help!

My dumbass decided to purchase this Yamaha PSR-195 from someone on Craigslist. He said everything was working fine. It didn’t come with a power cord and he didn’t have batteries so I couldn’t test it before purchasing. I spent $55 on it and when I put batteries in, it turns on but there is no sound coming from the speakers. Could the speakers be blown? Please help. Thanks.

Sure enough, I had the pedal cord plugged into the headphone slot so...voila....no sound. Thank you for saving me tons of time, energy and money. My first call was to Yamaha who told me the thing was broken and I would have to take it a Yamana repair center two hours away from me! NEVER will I call Yamaha again! the 'no sound' thing on these PSRs
by: Anonymous

just checking, everyone knows
1) you cant leave a 1/8" - 1/4" HEADPHONE ADAPTER plugged in, the presence of the plug still in the jack causes the signal NOT to pass thru to the speakers, whether your headphones are plugged in or not;
2) if you accidentally plug the sustain pedal into the headphone jack, your sustain won't work but you won't notice, because there will also BE NO SOUND.
3) there are abunch of other things that cause no sound, but 1) and 2) are good places to check first....
right?

I have a 1 year old DGX-650 and my 7 year old and his friend were playing with it and then they reported that it had no sound. (Grrrr). I turned it all off and returned later to find that sound was coming through the headphones only. The manual didn't help me. This forum did. I pulled out the pedal jack and the sound came through immediately. I replaced the pedal jack and it's all back to normal - thank goodness! Good luck with yours.

headphone Jack
by: Anonymous

I have a DGX-620. Like other respondents everything was fine until I used the headphones recently. When I took the jack out there was no speaker sound. I suspect I have damaged the system which isolates the headphones when the jack is engaged. Even now I have to twist the jack to get both head phones to produce sound. How do I gain access to this part of the instrument?

No sound coming out bec im using the wrong plug.
by: Tgf

Found the problem. Dont use a guitar cable, use the Y cable that has a ground. This is the Item description. "STAGG HIGH QUALITY Y CABLE.". When using a mixer use the 2 end plugs and when using a portable amp, use 1 end of the two ends plugs to the amp. My tech was kind enough yo find the problem w/o charging a fee!
I hope this will help!

Yamaha PSR-38
by: Anonymous

I couldn't find the adapter that went with this so I used some random AC adapter that fit. BIG MISTAKE! The voltage coming out of the adapater was double what is rated for the piano. It turned on and worked until the volume was turned up and then POP! That's the most awful sound you can hear coming out of (expensive) electronics. Then a couple of weeks later I did find the original Yamaha AC adapter and plugged it in. The digital display seems to be working fine, so that indicates that the circuit board is okay (relief!) but the speakers were emitting a buzz. I plugged in a headphone and same buzz coming through. I think I can safely say that either the amplifier and/or speakers are blown. My guess is the internal amp or related hardware that drives the sound.

I can do soldering so now my challenge is to find a suitable replacement for the amplifier and go from there. Speaker replacement is a piece of cake so I need to figure out the specs on the amp to see if I can find something that would work with this piano and give it a shot. Otherwise I'll either donate it or find another piano that has a working amp but blown circuit board and swap out the non-working parts.

Anyone have a PSR-38 with a blown circuit board willing to part with theirs?

Not sure it's a solution but... Yamaha is now working!! Got an answer from Yamaha that it was to do with the midi setting. Keyboard had been switched off for some moonths - when I turned it back on to check out the settings I found it was working again. Still don't know how to switch midi off if it happens again, but I do think that may have caused the problem. Hope you guys have as much luck.

NOT A storage issue
by: Anonymous

Open layer traces on the PC board do not happen from storing the keyboard in your basement for a few months. How often you play the instrument has nothing to do with open layer traces either.

Most likely event is someone damaged the unit by accidental tug or trip over wires, or neglectful use (not a storage issue).

same problem with my Korg
by: Anonymous

I had the same problem with my Korg. I don't know anything about electronics but a Korg repair person wrote on my receipt "Repaired open layered traces." Apparently he told me this happens quite often when you don't use the keyboard for some time and it's left in a damp area. Looking at my circumstance he is exactly right, that is what happened. I left it in the basement where it's damp and I didn't use it for months. If you don't want to play, it's good just to put it on for a bit every once in awhile.
