Help in making decision between Yamaha PSR S900 and Yamaha PSR S910 keyboards.

by REYGUEL
(GAHANNA,OHIO)

I am a trying my hardest to decide on whether to save for a PSRS900 OR PSR910. I still have a PSR3000 that's unrepairable by Yamaha and I still love those sounds IF it could somehow possibly be repaired. Seeing that does not seem to be an option, I'm studying the S900 and S910. What is REALLY the major difference between the 2 (besides price)? I know it has some of the Tyros 3 sounds but isn't the sounds on the Tyros 2 just a good and clear? I also want to assume that you can download more sounds and beats to the S900. I'm willing to go no higher than $1600.00 for a keyboard. Isn't CD quality recording just as good as MP3 recording? They both use the Motif line of sounds right? So what is it in the S910 that would make me want to purchase it outside the expanded sounds(which i can download more). Please give me your thoughts. Thanks.

Ther's a Lot'a Difference
by: Allan Joshua

Please be informed that the S910 has almost double the number of voices than the S900. For instance, the 900 does not have 'Brass Falls', but the 910 has different kinds of them. There are many such differences apart from the ones listed above. I would strongly suggest you go through the specfications of both models from the YAMAHA site before you go for either of them.

Decisions, decisions, decisions !!!
by: Alfred

Dear Reyguel: On the assumption that you have enough saved to cover corresponding cost of repair of your 3000, look up Electronic Edge, Ohio. I’ve no idea how reputable they are, or what their repair charges are, but whatever the info you get from them, it might help to establish the feasibility of buying eiter of the other units you are coveting. If a positive outcome results from this suggestion, please post a feedback message so other enthusiasts who live in your state will know where they can turn for similar help. Thank you and good luck.

PSR S900
by: Alfred

Dear Sumtiro: Your keyboard was released by Yamaha in 2007, making it relatively new. I suppose the warranty is no longer valid, and I would strongly advise you to check with the store where you bought it to see if they can have it repaired. Above all, do not attempt any repairs yourself. The only actions you can try: Check batteries if you use them in your unit. Weak batteries can sometimes produce low volume and buzzing. If you are using the Power Adaptor to energize your keyboard, have a technician check its OUTPUT and the Jack (where the Adaptor enters the unit) to see if it is dirty. Your keyboard is a complex electronic machine, and I must repeat, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR IT YOURSELF.
Good luck.

Thanks very much Greg for your reply.
Great it works again although we will never know what the problem really was.
Not sure you opened your keyboard but if you did, you have seen how very simple the mechanism works. A mini-circuit-board, a 3/4 wheel and a spring. All very accessible when the keyboard is open.
Even a small piece of paper or something similar falling in the openings around the wheel can obstruct the complete movement of the wheel and giving this 'out of tune' problem.
Anyhow, hopefully this helps other people.
Still I advice strongly the help of a skilled repair-person if someone is not sure what he/she does by taking a keyboard to pieces.

Take care
Dick

to all who replied, a big thank you, yes,i had been keeping the tuning in place by taping the pitchwheel to where it was in tune with the rest of the instrument, then, suddenly to my surprise,it sprung back into perfefect pitch after weeks of gigging with my problem,i couldn't afford to leave it at the repair place because i was committed in my gigs and needed the keyboard, happily this has corrected itself, your' concern and helpful hints, all of you,are much appreciated, enjoy your boards and peace to you all.

Hi Dhanushka,

Obvious you have seen the posts before.
It can be a lot more than only dust, the spring can be broken or 'something' is obstructing the movement.
Yes you can have a look if you are confident and skilled opening up a keyboard.
In fact the 'mechanism' itself is very simple but if you are not sure what you are doing, I would ask a professional repair-person to have a look.

Let us know please what the problem was so we all can learn something.

Take care
Dick

Pitch Bends Wheel PSR s900
by: Alfred

Dear Greg: The fellow out in San Diego owns a PSR 540. As I cautioned, be very careful if you open your unit. Make notes as you go along to help in its reassembly. DO NOT FIDDLE WITH ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE CLEANING OF THE WHEEL SPRING. Good luck.

Pitch Bend Problem
by: Alfred

Dear Greg: Dick was referring to a guy out in San Diego who had the same problem. He removed the accumulated dirt from the spring and his unit is working fine. Unfortunately he did not identify his keyboard's Model or Number, nor did he describe how he openeed his unit. One thing he did indicate was that he is (intuitively) handy; and if you are not, but are determined to open your keyboard, BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL. Study how the Housing is secured (Screws, etc). IF YOU ARE NOT A DIY PERSON, the best course of action is to have a Yamaha or Authorized technician do the job.

Pitchbendwheel
by: Dick Rector

Hello Greg,

No I haven't ever opened up a 900. But only a few weeks ago someone had the same problem and found some 'dirt' obstructing the pitchbendwheel moving free.
After opening up and the use of a can compressed air he solved his problem. I hope for you the problem is 'as simple'.
I am afraid I have no other advice.
Good luck.

Dick

psr s900 pitch wheel
by: greg

Hi Dick

Thank you for replying, yes,all you say here is right on,i use the bend wheel often in my playing,it is so effective to get that extra feeling, now I have to keep it taped in the tuned position, which is a third of the way down from its original position.i am gigging daily and i don't have a backup keyboard, repairing it would mean me leaving it for at least a week, have you ever opened yours' up? i am considering that to see if there is any small object obstructing it,thanks again for helping Dick,

greg

Pitchbendwheel
by: Dick Rector

Hi,

This is strange, the pitchbendwheel has a springmechanism and the 'notch' should be in the middle pointing upright when not in use. If not, the mechanism is broken or obstructed by a foreign object. If you have to tape it for some unknown reason, be sure it is exact in the middle position.
Make also sure your 'Modulationwheel' is all the way down, there is NO spring for this one and if it is somewhere up from zero the keyboard can sound very mutch out of tune.

Please let us know if/when you solved this problem so we can all learn something.
Regards
Dick
