Yamaha DGX 205 will only turn on with batteries...

by David
(Annandale, VA)

I have had the DGX 205 for quite a few years and my brother had a go at it sometime last year and I'm just getting around to fixing it. I think he plugged in the wrong power adapter, because now the keyboard won't turn on while plugged in. It will still turn on with batteries so I'm not sure what is going on. I read in another question posted that it could be the fuse, but if this were the case, would it still run on the batteries?

While I know it depends on the voltage and amps of the adapter he DID use, what kind of damage are we talking? At home fix, bring it to the store, or dump it and buy a baby grand?

Haha, thanks in advance!

Yamaha DGX 205
by: Alfred

Dear David: I'm not familiar with the DGX 205 except to know that it was released in 2004. That I know of, the Battery circuit is separate from the Adaptor circuit, and you should
determine if the Center Pin or the Lateral Contacts of the Socket (Jack) in the unit are bent or damaged. THAT MAY BE THE ONLY PROBLEM.
I don?t know if there is a fuse in the unit.
If not suffiiciently experienced in repair work, your best solution is to contact nearest Yamaha Repair Shop:
http://yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/Service/ServicerLocator/0,,VNM%3DLIVE,00.html

Have Model and Serial number at hand, and explain your problem. Hopefully they can help. Charge(s)for any repair(s) should be well worth the investment so that you can continue enjoying your keyboard. Good luck.

YAMAHA DGX-520
by: Anonymous

Hello guys! Ok.. I think I have a legitimate question now.. :) I bought the DGX-520 because of the full keyboard, and I love it. Now... I purchased it used and the LCD screen doesn't display any information. One side is blue, and the other side is white, or clear. Anyone have any idea as to what may be going on? You think it may be a simple fix, or possibly have to take it in for repair? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I tried the contrast button, and nothing. No change.

Thanks,

Carlos

Using Yamaha DGX 205 as MIDI

by Ben
(Indianapolis, IN, USA)

I just hooked up my DGX 205 YAMAHA keyboard to my computer via USB port and it says it is usable as a MIDI controller but when I went onto Reason it didn't show up on the MIDI controlling settings there. So I was wondering if it isn't combatable or how to make it work with Reason or any other software because I am not yet sure which software I am going to use. It's between Pro Tools 8, Reason and Record, or Ableton Live 8

The sustain pedal for my DGX-205 is not functioning properly. What could the problem be?

by Brandon
(Coopersville MI)

So I just got this keyboard (I'm borrowing it from my grandma. I have some experience with keyboards like this at least), and I like it so far, but my sustain pedal is not working. First of all, I did just what the manual said; plugged it in when the power was OFF, making sure not to be pressing it down while plugging it in, but it just doesn't do anything when I press it. If I plug it in while the keyboard is ON, I get sustain, but too much. In other words, pressing it or not, it sustains. I can't tell you what type of pedal it is because it doesn't say on it.

FC3 versus FC4
by: Randy

Don't know if this will help someone, but I am aware of a distinction that could be helpful.

Many sustain/damper pedals are made as switches (simply on or off). The Yamaha FC4 is one such pedal. And the plug for it is a 2-conductor (i.e. tip and sleeve - or as some have referred to it, "mono" type plug).

But there are some other pedals that are slightly more advanced in capability, allowing more than just on/off. These are often referred to as having a "half/damper" function. The Yamaha FC3 is one such pedal. Rather than having a simple on/off switch in it, it has a potentiometer in it that allows not only for on or off, but other points in between. It is common for these types of pedals to have a tip-ring-sleeve plug (or "stereo type plug as some would call it).

Almost all keyboards are ready to use the on/off type. Some might be picky about the polarity, but still are designed for the on/off function of the non-half-damper pedal.

But, not all keyboards are ready to use the half-damper type of pedal. In fact, it appears to me that they won't even work with them. For instance, my Yamaha DGX-500 is happy with an FC4 pedal, but doesn't appear to work with the "better, more expensive" FC3 pedal that has half-damper capability.

On the other hand, for keyboards that do allow for half-damper functionality, the only way to get it is to use a pedal that has that feature.

Hope this helps someone.

RE:
by: Brandon

I have talked to my grandma a bit about it, and she couldn't even figure it out.

Yeah, it's a stereo sustain pedal. I've never heard of anything like that. I have another sustain pedal at my brother's house that I will be getting back soon (THAT one, is mono). When that happens, I'm going to to test it on this keyboard. If it works, the sustain pedal I have right now is broken (Note (if I haven't mentioned before): my grandma never had any trouble getting it to work), if it doesn't, the keyboard itself is the source of the problem. I will also test the pedal I have right now on another one of my keyboards to see how that goes.

Thanks for all of your help guys. I think I can take it from here!

sustain
by: Dick Rector

Hi Brandon,

I am a bit puzzled by the '2 black rings' you mentioned. Do you mean on the jackplug itself? The round 'head', black ring, piece of metal, black ring, long piece of metal and than the 'housing' of the plug?
Sorry if this sounds silly, I don't know how much you know, but if this is the plug, it is wrong.
A sustain plug used for a Yamaha keyboard is normally MONO and if the plug has TWO black rings it is a STEREO plug.
Doesn't mean much yet however. If only the 'head' is connected and the long piece of metal, it should be alright and working normal.
BUT if the second ring is also connected, it makes a shortcut when plugged in. Is it possible that someone changed the plug or is it the original and used on this keyboard before.
If you can open the plug (by turning the housing gentle anti clockwise)you might be able to see where wires are connected. Should be onle TWO wires.
To be honest, can't think of anything else, it sounds to me you are trying to use a multi functional guitar-pedal or something similar.

Let us know please if you found the problem.
Regards
Dick

RE: sustain
by: Brandon

I've checked everything down to just about the last detail I can, and I don't think there's a problem with the polarity. Although I did look at the pedal to see if it has a switch, it turns out it doesn't. Something that was bothering me when I first looked at the pedal is that around the end of the cord (where the jack is) I saw two of those "black rings" around it. Of all the keyboard pedals I've seen in my life, they all had one ring. I wish I knew more about the details of the rings and what they do specifically, but I do know that when those are used for audio, one ring is a channel. Therefore, the pedal is sending two channels of data? Like I said, I'm no expert in this area... Lastly, I tried resetting the keyboard in both the ways you said, and still, nothing.

sustain
by: Dick Rector

Hi Brandon,

I am guessing since you don't know the type.

1.Check if here is a 'polarity' switch on the pedal.
2.If you go to 'function' and 'sustain' check if by accident the polarity has been set wrongly.
3.Do a 'mild' reset with the pedal connected:
While pressing down the highest white key, power up the keyboard.
4. A factory reset can be done by the same key + the nearest 3 black keys.
This brings the keyboard back to 'out of the box status'.
WARNING this will delete everything that might be in user area's. So make back-ups first!

Hope this solves the problem.
Regards
Dick

I need some orientation for my DGX-205.I have cleaned my keyboard from the inside carefully because some keys didn´t sound, and i had to push them very hard to made the sound out. After the clean up the problem is the same. I used the right materials for the cleanning, and didnt lost a piece. I am sure that the problem lies on the grey plastic beds (i dont know the name of this pieces) between the keys and the circuits. Please, help me.

Dead Keys Yamaha DGX 205
by: Allfred

Dear Israel: The problem is very likely the "grey
plastic beds" as you have pointed out. They are called Underlay Pads and probably are worn out.
I do not know if there is a Yamaha Office in Israel where you might be able to acquire the parts you need. If not, you might try contscting:

Yamaha Music Europe GmbH
Siemensstr. 43, D-25462 Rellingen, (b. Hamburg,) Germany
Tel: (49) 4101-303-800 Fax: (49) 4101-303-869

Their Parts department should have the part(s). Be sure to mention that you own a DGX 205. Good luck.

loop playback on the Yamaha dgx-205

by Daniel
(Albany NY)

hi, i have a Yamaha dgx-205, but no manual. i wanted to know if there was a way i could record something, and have it loop back over and over? this would be used for a jamming session. i want to record a phrase and have it loop while i go and sit behind another instrument. can this be done?

ps- i know that i can record a whole song, and then play it back. but i'm looking more for something i can set and forget, rather than keep running back to hit the "play" button again.

thank you very much!!

loop playback
by: Dick Rector

Hi Daniel,

For downloading a manual in pdf format go to:
www.yamaha.co.jp/manual/english/index

To make a loop you have to create a style or a pad or modify an existing one.
There are various style- and padmaker programs for free on psrtutorial.com by Michael Bedesem and on jososoft.dk by Jorgen Sorensen.
Than you can hit a dedicated button and the loop repeats itself until you have finished your coffee, run around to other instruments or someone pulls the plug out.

Hope this puts you on the right track.
Give feedback please if this works for you.

Dick
