USB MIDI on Yamaha NP-V80

by Allan
(CA)

I like the Yamaha NP-V80 and was all ready to purchase it, until I saw that it didn't have MIDI IN/OUT. It only has a USB MIDI. I have older MIDI gear that requires a MIDI IN/OUT in order to trigger the Yamaha NP-V80.

Does anyone know how I could trigger my old MIDI gear using the NP-V80?

Thanks!

still no real solution

I think, the only solution is a cheap netbook to be used as midi-bridge, so you connect the netbook via normal USB-A to USB-B Cable (like to connect a printer) to the NP-V80/60 and use the described "USB-A" to "DIN" Midi from another USB plug of the netbook to connect to your modules / old MIDI Devices. Now you only have to explain the netbook, that it has to switch the midi signals coming in from the NPV80/60 to the MIDI Cable. I think, a simple software like reaper or other non-commercial solutions should be able to do that, but I just didnt try it out.
Iam still looking for suitable midi-cables, but the problem is - the front usb is only for usb-sticks and not for midi cables at npv80. The backside USB is for connection with pc and should be working in both directions. Still hoping, any big concern will produce a fitting cable from "USB-B" to DIN, but the problem is that USB-B has no power supply like USB-A, because its generally a USB input and no output. So such a cable only could work with separate power adapter/supply.

I was 'screwed'

You're the clever one Allan.... I bought the NP-V80 and the salesman told me "Of course it's midi connectable"

I also bought from Amazon the midi to USB connecting cable and adapter..... it doesn't work.

Quite simply I cannot use my old Alesis and Emu modules with this new keyboard.

I've searched through articles on the internet and nobody has a positive answer!

On the bright side, the piano sounds very good through the mixer and PA speakers.

I've used this lightweight keyboard several times now on stage, and the feel and sound is far superior to my old Roland.... but I'd still like to be able to activate the old modules just now and again!
