Problem with E-Flat and A Keys in all octaves

by Philip Westin
(Winchester, CA USA)

I have a Yamaha DGX-505 keyboard that I connect with a Mac Pro for composing. In the past few months, the E-flat and A keys stop working in all octaves. If I jiggle the keyboard or move it around a little, both notes usually resume playing. This is happening with greater frequency in the past few weeks. Can you recommend something to fix this?

Problems E Flat and A Octaves
by: Keane Jules

Hey Guys do hope all is well

I have dound the solution.

I have had the same problems for 5 months with my Yamaha Montage 7. It had me thinking that my software triggered the keyboard but that was not the case

The problem may be our Digital Jack Board ( with the sustain pedal input, Foot Switch Inputs and Midi In, Out aslo those with a Midi Through )

Best thing to do is check for a cold joint at the sustain pedal and foot switch inputs and re solder it or just replace the jacks with new ones and everything should be back to normal

God Spoke to Diane, and we listened NEW
by: Anonymous

Everytime I pressed an A the A flat also made a sound. I turned the keyboard vertically, the lower notes closer to the floor.

Then I started playing the notes again and again, pressing the A and tapping the A flats again and again. Took me about 5 minutes. Now It works! I hope it lasts

My Korg's F sharps didn't pay on the whole keyboard, followed by B flat in about 10 minutes. Tipped the instrument, and played the keys, no problem at all.

G# stopped working within 2 months of purchase
by: Kapil Mehra

Bought the new keyboard E373 in May 2021 and within 2 months facing issue with G# key stopped working. Contacted the dealer but no good response as if after selling the product they are done, not their responsibility anymore. Only suggestion was to try using a hair dryer and check. To my surprise, it started working but just for a day. Again the same key stopped working, and getting resolved with hair dryer every time. No customer care, no escalation matrix/contacts provided by the person. Fundamental question is - is this the quality Yamaha delivers, both in product and services? What does warranty mean, just to give such temporary fixes??

Has to be dirty contacts, but it works!
by: Steve

I've have a P-105 for about 4 years, used happily on many gigs and recently, G1 and C#2 occasionally stop sounding along with C#6 and G6 (interesting they're the same notes but octaves apart). Tried the tipping technique and many glissandos, unplugging/replugging power supply, etc. and it actually works–for a time. If it gets worse, I'll disassemble and blow out/clean contacts. Then if it still happens, I'll be glad I only spent $499. on it 4 years ago!

Frustrated Once Again
by: Frustrated No More

After a few years of the solution I stumbled upon working. My Motif is back to doing the same thing, i.e. every C & F# key striking once at full velocity (no matter how hard I press it) and sustaining, then no more response from the key. The only solution I've discovered is that I can use another keyboard connected to the MIDI IN as a controller. Though this works I think that for the $2,400 I paid for it, THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE & YAMAHA OWES US AN EXPLANATION & FIX FOR IT!!!! I find the fact that all they suggest is replacing the motherboard (which is unlikely to work & most people could buy another keyboard for the cost of parts & labor) to be an insult to our intelligence & disrespectful to a great many customers as evidenced on this website. Who knows how many others are out there who haven't found this page. *Deep sigh* I wish there was some way we could collectively file a grievance to be made whole with our investments in Yamaha products. Any suggestions?

Keys that don't sound
by: Anonymous

It doesn't happen to often on my DGX230 but few times that it has, pressing down and moving index finger/palm fast from one end to the other has fixed the problem for me, and I'm assuming is due to dust getting between the key contacts but maybe not because most of the time are the same keys that don't sound. Reading everyone else's suggestion tipping and hair dryer it makes me feel like all these suggestions are related to dirty contacts and moving dust around usually has fixed the problems, but I have never disassembled the keyboard.

Now, B flat, B, E, 1F,2F all below middle C. I have tested continuity from the key contact to the end of ribbon cable that connects to the relay board. I have tone. any other ideas or tips. Thanks.

I have the DGX-505. E and b flat keys below middle C have no sound. For this magical tipping solution, how long and how hard do you have to bang on it? Is this fix is to move the dust around? Just bought a used Yamaha PortableGrand DGX-505 and made sure all keys worked, both before we bought it and when it was set up at home. However, within a couple days the 2 lowest B-flats and Es (4 keys) stopped playing. Turning it on its end/side (lower bass keys down) and rapping on the underside of the keyboard did the trick! We also pressed down the keys (while still sideways) and rapped again just to be sure. Worked like magic!

My g# / a flat seems heavy to the touch after turning on the keyboard compared the the resistance felt on all other kys. This only happens after the keyboard has been turned off overnight. My fix right now is to rapidly press the key up/down and it returns to the normal touch sensitivity. Would like a more permanent fix.

Now it's the full chord C and F#
by: Rob

fixed the Eb and A by opening the keyboard and cleaning it (the dream is not working). Dust is probably the reason why.

1 week later, when I press full chord C/F# (C E G and higher C) (F# Bb C# higher F#) in ascending order, the last note (higher C/F#) is not working, and that's in every octave. I tried the dream thing but does not work, and its too much work to open the keyboard again with all of its 30+ screws. Any suggestions?

Couple of keys go mute
by: Anonymous

Once in a while my DGX-230's all F# and C keys to the right of middle C would stop working, after trying to turn it off and on also even resetting it to the manufacturer original setting didn't fix the problem, then I ran my palm across all the white keys from last key on the right to last key on the left, amazingly fixed the problem and since then I had the same issue once again and doing the palm trick fixed it again.

Now I have a different issue which I have not resolved yet and that is the volume drops off after playing for a while and the only thing that fixes that is to turn it off for a while and turn it back on, I do have it connected to an amp.

Problem solved
by: Srivathsa

Holding the keyboard vertically and then back to original position solved the problem many times.

But last week the same problem happened again and the keys would not work. Holding the keyboard vertically also did not solve the problem. I changed the place of keyboard (moved it to a place away from AC and window) and it solved the problem. Because earlier place was near to the AC/Cooler vent and the cold air blew directly yo the keyboard. So i changed the place, the keys started working. I think moisture has something to do with it, thats why even hair dryer method suggested in this thread would also work.

Had the EXACT same problem. A and E flat in every octave randomly stopped working. I tried doing the vertical thing and wiggling the keys and hitting it and everything with no luck. BUT then I took a hair dryer and pushed it down on each key to blow out the dust from between the cracks. This was a last ditch effort before taking it apart and vacuuming the inside, but it worked! Highly recommend the hair dryer to solve this problem.

Decades-old Problem SOLVED
by: Anonymous

Dear Frustrated No More,
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I purchased my YPG-225 almost 20 years ago. By year three certain keys would just stop working, then weeks later they would start working with no rhyme or reason. I just always crossed my fingers that they would work during gigs... and they did. Well, I loaned my keyboard to a friend and warned that keys may stop working. No problem for over a year then for no reason all Bb's and E's stopped over a month ago. This time the problem didn't cure itself. Just read your post and the problem was fixed in under 5 minutes. Thank you X 1000!

All of my C's and F# played at full volume no matter how hard I pressed. Also if I played a C, the B and G immediately below it wouldn't work while holding the C. There were other crazy things happening as well. So... I stood it up on end with the bass note towards the floor, banged under the keys (heard "coins" and stuff, just like Diane's Dream), pressed all the keys twice, banged again, and VOI-FLIPPIN-LA, it works perfectly.

I am a 48 year old engineer and not insane. This really worked!

Tipping the keyboard onto its side did the trick when some keys aren't working. Doing this moves all the crap that may have entered the keys and internal contacts of the keyboard. When I tipped it on its side, I heard all these things (coins, little trinkets, etc.) moving down the keyboard likely freeing up whatever contacts were affected.

Finally found a Solution!!!
by: Frustrated No More

I had posted earlier that every C and F# key was sticking, i.e., they would strike hard and sustain without playing again. Well, turning the keyboard on end didn't work. However, there was a suggestion on this page to find the offending key and keep it pressed when turning on the keyboard. Well, this eventually worked!!!

I say eventually because the trick is to find the offending key, which I did totally by accident, but then reasoned a methodology. There was one key I hit that, when kept pressed, made the others work properly. So at first, I duck taped it down to get through a practice session that I needed to do. When I turned the keyboard off and back on. I took the tape off and violá, everything was fine.

Here's how to find the key:
Start at one end of the keyboard and hold down the first malfunctioning key, then press another malfunctioning key. If the other malfunctioning key works, then the one you're holding down is the offending key. If not, then move on to the next malfunctioning key and hold it down while trying the other malfunctioning keys. When you eventually find the offending key, simply turn off the keyboard and hold the key down when turning it on until it finishes starting up.

Hope this helps all of you who are still having trouble. Yamaha had suggested that I have the motherboard replaced. Now I have avoided that costly prognosis. God bless!

I have a yamaha keyboard PSR-E333, not a piano. A few days ago, middle B stopped working. then worked again. then when I'd play middle B flat, middle b flat and middle B would sound. Now every F and B in the keyboard don't work. It has been really humid here in the last couple of weeks and I don't know if that will affect it. Problem is, I teach music classes with that keyboard. Will try Dianne's solution, tipping it on the side, before I open it! I'm afraid I might damage it further if I open it and clean it.

On Yamaha Arius 141, lowest Fa# did not work.
Also all si not working when LA# is holded before. (but both working if played alone or togheter)
Same problem with Mi-FA

After putting vertical a couple of times and played all lowest keys several times it worked for me. I think it was some humidity.

Still remain problem of Mi-Fa and La#-Si

A & Eb in all octaves won't work on my DGX 205.
by: Anonymous

I own a DGX 205, and problems with the A & Eb in every octive not working. I found the solution to the problem.

SOLUTION:
Unplug the power supply & sustain pedal from the back of the keyboard.

Wait 15 to 20 seconds.

Press the power button, and keep pressing it while plugging ONLY the power supply, and keep pressing for 5 seconds & release the button.

Your keys start working again.

Now plug the sustain pedal in & check the keys. You'll notice that the notes are sustained without the pedal. Power off the keyboard & then power it back on.

TADA! Problem solved.

I really hope that this helps those in the same predicament.

And good luck.

Could someone who had success post a video?
by: David

It's pretty crazy and somewhat comforting to find out that my keyboard problem is not unique. All of my E and Bb keys above middle C do not work. My solution for the last year or so has been to bang on one of those dead E or Bb keys until it starts working. This usually works. However, I've been banging for a good 30 minutes now to no avail. I tried the Diana dream solution and that didn't work either. I stood the keyboard on the side with the bass octaves toward the ground and the high treble octaves higher up in the air and then tried tapping on the dead notes... after about 5 minutes of this I figured that either I'm doing it wrong or it's not working for me. It would be great if someone who had success with the Diana trick could post a video on YouTube (and of course give credit to Diana).
Diana, the fact that you had a dream about how to fix your keyboard and that dream actually worked is nothing short of amazing! Truly God-inspired!

It worked
by: Jesus C

In my case all A keys were not working. So I stand it vertically and play them while conected (slowly moved) and they started to work.

My guess is that the internal control gets a bit lose becase a moved the keyboard to other room with the keys upside.

So... try this before throwing the keyboard :-)

Every B, C, and E,F on each octaves don't play if I hold the first of these notes:
C is silent if I have played the B and still hold the B. But C works if I don't play the B.
The Diane's trick doesn't work for me.

Potential solution
by: Anonymous

My father and I were having trouble with this we tried the setting it on its side trick with no avail and then decided to take it apart. We are neither one techno geniuses but found the solution to be the rubber stripping underneath the keys. We mash on each of these and the thing worked like a charm. In all likelyhood, the rubber stripping is starting to get old.

All E notes above middle C went out, but SOLVED!
by: Anonymous

Again, that freaky little solution of setting the unit on end (or vertically as they're describing it) and playing with the keys eventually solved my problem. I know, it makes no sense at all. but it DID work and I am VERY grateful to the original poster and this community in general. Be very patient though. it did not work right away. Took about ten minutes of "messing around," including rattling or wiggling the unit or case as well as the keys repeatedly until suddenly all keys came to life suddenly. REMARKABLE!!!

Tipping advice worked ;)
by: Tolitz

After my Bb & E keys in the top 4 octaves stopped working, I was about ready to trash the thing and buy a used one on Craigslist. But in a last ditch effort to save money I went on Google and found this page - and read Diane's suggestion. After about 10 people saying it worked, I figured it was worth trying...

...and was glad I did! Worked like a charm. Initially after I tipped the keyboard vertically on its side and started lightly banging the keys and the underside of the thing, it worked but once I put it upright again the keys would stop working again. But a couple more times of tipping and hammering solved it permanently (for now), and I can finally play the piano after almost 2 months of stressing over what to do. It's a weird and quirky solution, but the important thing is it works. Thanks a bunch Diane!

WHY????
by: Spencer

Same problem, same keys----I did an initial search online and didn't find anything helpful. So I just spent 4 hours taking the entire piano apart, looking for a solution, tediously cleaning it, all to no avail. Then one more search online brought me to this line of posts. I couldn't fathom that Diane's trick would help---it made no sense. So I put everything back carefully, tipped it on it's side, and voila! Fixed. Thanks to Diane. No thanks to Yamaha.

Diane's Trick Worked
by: Anonymous

Yes! It worked for me. Put it vertically and pressed the two keys that were not working - they started working. Set it down horizontally and they still work. After that I used compressed air to clean out underneath. May be it was a small piece of dirt/paper that moved and hopefully it will continue to work. Thanks, Diane.

FIXED!
by: Music Lover

I had this problem for a long time and banging it helped for a year. But then even banging didn't help.one of the bunches

I opened the keyboard,(took out about 25 screws), there are bunches of wires coming out from the keys, and they're taped down. I tried pushing down the wires, and realized that one of the bunches of wires, when I pushed it down, made the keys start working again. I taped down that bunch of wires with duct tape, and it's working for a few months already great.

THANK YOU DIANE
by: Anonypotomus

My boyfriend and I were wanting to sell the keyboard because it has been sitting in storage for the past 2 years since it was bought. Literally no one has used it. So when we finally found a buyer for it, we turned it on to make sure it was working properly and the E and B flat keys weren't working!

I frantically searched how to fix it thinking it was a programming error, while my boyfriend was banging on it.

When I saw Diane's comment I thought there's no way! But so crazy enough it has to work. Lo and behold, it worked. We giggled like crazy because of how funny the solution was.

So thanks Diane! I don't usually comment or write reviews but we had to this time as a testimony to Diane's method. Can't believe it worked.

E and a keys not working
by: jingles

Fixed mine easily.Problem is not keys or rubber pads etc.,but the ribbon cable that connects keys to the circuit board.Problem wil be a loose wire on the circuit board end of the ribbon cable.Take note of how cable is orientated(purple stripe to the right for example) and then carefully prise up the cable connector with a butter knife.Don't worry if the locking guide comes off. Then remove ribbon cables.Next step is to replace locking guides into the receptacles on circuit board and then carefully push ribbon cables back into place making sure all the ends are straight.Worked for me!

I have had the same problem with the exact same keys. I also searched the internet for this problem and found someone else with the exact same problem, the exact same keys.

My keyboard, and the internet posters keyboard was the DGX 220.

I got tired of this and just bought a new keyboard, teh YPG 235, which I believe is the same as the DGX 225.

I almost bought a different brand because of this problem. But I like the features on my keyboard so much, so I just bought another one. I might end up getting burnt if the exact same problem happens again.

I don't know of any fixes, but know that this is a problem others have had.

contact pads??
by: Dick Rector

Hi Philip,

Sounds really like a broken or damaged underlay-contact-pad if all the keys of the same kind are giving the problem.

Depending how handy you are but not really a DIY job to replace one (or all). Usually every octave has his own pad but all the keys of the same sort are following the same 'route' to the sound-processor that's why if one pad is broken the other keys also don't do what they should do.
Go to PSRTUTORIAL.COM - FORUM - PSR3000 and you can find a very good article with pictures how to change the pad(s).
At least you get an impression of the job.

A good (VERY CAREFULLY) clean of the contacts with cleaning alcohol sometimes does it.

Dick
