You have to use UX-16 Midi cable. No other cable works in Yamaha keyboards. Thank you

Midi Cables
by: Ed

There are a multitude of midi cable you can use, but it would depend on your machine or your sound card. If you are running a soundblaster then it will either be a 25 pin to 2x5 or a mini 2x5 pin din to standard 2x5 pin din.

If you are using a machine with on board sound ie laptop then you can purchase the usb midi cable from various sites.... Yamaha make their own verions just go to yamaha's site.

when your transfering data it is also good to remember signal loss over a distance so the shorter the better. I have had a few transmission failures using 10 m midi cables.

As tp the memory full write protected. The psr will go into defensive mode when it doesn't like the midi transfer and if you recycle you can corrupt the memory, to restore you will have to a factory rest which you can google and this should clear all the memory. be warned you will lose all non-standard data.....

i can't transmit and recieve midi
by: Anonymous

I have a midi-usb cable and connect to pc. PC could play midi file and listen in the psr290. But when using the Songfiler, the file could not transmit, receive and control. They all have message "The selected MIDI device is in use. Quit any applications currently using the device. Indeed, I could not have any application in process even at the time I reboot the computer and it still have the error.

Thank you everyone! I had the same problem and switching the in/out midi cables worked for me too. Ridiculous (seriously, what were the manufacturers thinking??), but I'm glad it's such a simple solution!

song filer fix
by: Cheerful

Thanks Anonymous (April 2008) for your tip about switching midi in and midi out to their opposites. It worked! I thought I had tried every variation and solution including this one already. Anyway, thanks. I finally transferred a purchased song to my instrument.

Try UX-16 cord
by: Raagnk

Hi,
I too have a Yamaha PSR 290. As is given in the manual, you have to use a UX-16 cable (am not sure about the number, please check manual for confimation)which can be connected to your PC's USB port. The other end of the cable has 2 5-pin sockets which you have to connect to the MIDI-IN and MIDI-OUT of the jack at the rear of the keyboard. I havent as yet bought the cable - it is quite costly I believe.

Please try it and post the results here.

Bye.

Do you use Midi in and out?
I had the same problem that you had and after surfing in the internet to find a solution I found in a forum the answer to my problem. Switch the cables. Midi in into midi out and then the way around. I couldn´t believe that this was it. Try it!
