Yamaha PSR-240 keyboard - no sound

by Jason
(Johannesburg,Gauteng,South Africa)

I have the yamaha PSR-240 keyboard and although the power is on, no sound is playing, are the speakers broken or what could be a possible reason for having no sound?

no sound fixed

My keyboard had LCD display and no sound. My solution was an easy one however, the pedal was plugged into the headphone socket!

the 'no sound' thing on these PSRs
by: Anonymous

just checking, everyone knows
1) you cant leave a 1/8" - 1/4" HEADPHONE ADAPTER plugged in, the presence of the plug still in the jack causes the signal NOT to pass thru to the speakers, whether your headphones are plugged in or not;
2) if you accidentally plug the sustain pedal into the headphone jack, your sustain won't work but you won't notice, because there will also BE NO SOUND.
3) there are abunch of other things that cause no sound, but 1) and 2) are good places to check first....
right?

I got mine working
by: Anonymous

I have a 1 year old DGX-650 and my 7 year old and his friend were playing with it and then they reported that it had no sound. (Grrrr). I turned it all off and returned later to find that sound was coming through the headphones only. The manual didn't help me. This forum did. I pulled out the pedal jack and the sound came through immediately. I replaced the pedal jack and it's all back to normal - thank goodness! Good luck with yours.

headphone Jack
by: Anonymous

I have a DGX-620. Like other respondents everything was fine until I used the headphones recently. When I took the jack out there was no speaker sound. I suspect I have damaged the system which isolates the headphones when the jack is engaged. Even now I have to twist the jack to get both head phones to produce sound. How do I gain access to this part of the instrument?

No sound coming out bec im using the wrong plug.
by: Tgf

Found the problem. Dont use a guitar cable, use the Y cable that has a ground. This is the Item description. "STAGG HIGH QUALITY Y CABLE.". When using a mixer use the 2 end plugs and when using a portable amp, use 1 end of the two ends plugs to the amp. My tech was kind enough yo find the problem w/o charging a fee!
I hope this will help!

I just got my keyboard yesterday and it was working fine until I plugged in the earphones, now the keyboard's speakers don't work :( They work if I switch speaker settings to always on, but I don't want speakers to work while I have headphones in, did I get a defective one?

Yamaha PSR-38
by: Anonymous

I couldn't find the adapter that went with this so I used some random AC adapter that fit. BIG MISTAKE! The voltage coming out of the adapater was double what is rated for the piano. It turned on and worked until the volume was turned up and then POP! That's the most awful sound you can hear coming out of (expensive) electronics. Then a couple of weeks later I did find the original Yamaha AC adapter and plugged it in. The digital display seems to be working fine, so that indicates that the circuit board is okay (relief!) but the speakers were emitting a buzz. I plugged in a headphone and same buzz coming through. I think I can safely say that either the amplifier and/or speakers are blown. My guess is the internal amp or related hardware that drives the sound.

I can do soldering so now my challenge is to find a suitable replacement for the amplifier and go from there. Speaker replacement is a piece of cake so I need to figure out the specs on the amp to see if I can find something that would work with this piano and give it a shot. Otherwise I'll either donate it or find another piano that has a working amp but blown circuit board and swap out the non-working parts.

Anyone have a PSR-38 with a blown circuit board willing to part with theirs?

Voltage on power supply
by: Anonymous

Just checked and I had my adaptor voltage set wrong so make sure it's a 12volt adapter UK people.

It was set to 4.5 and the lights came on but no sound. Changed back to 12 and it's fine.

When trying to find out where the "System" button was, we found out that the plug on the back had been put into the wrong slot when the keyboard was moved. Was that too easy?? Hopefully, I lost a pound or two while I was worrying!

My PSR-E344 Won't make any sound
by: Anonymous

I seem have the same problem here , My younger brother plagged my Japanese Yamaha Keyboard (100V) to the outlet (220 V) directly which i think caused hyper electric tension. the adaptor seems not working since then, but when i tried the keyboard with the batteries it turned on but no sound. It's written in Japanese and i can't find where the MIDI settings is. Any help ?

My headphone jack uses an adapter for my headphones, and I get no sound when I remove the headphones but not the adapter. However, when the entire adapter is removed from the headphone jack, the keyboard works fine again.

Solution? Maybe
by: Anonymous

Not sure it's a solution but... Yamaha is now working!! Got an answer from Yamaha that it was to do with the midi setting. Keyboard had been switched off for some moonths - when I turned it back on to check out the settings I found it was working again. Still don't know how to switch midi off if it happens again, but I do think that may have caused the problem. Hope you guys have as much luck.

by: Anonymous

I got a reply from Yamaha to check if Midi was off. The unit had been switched off for some weeks but I switched it back on to check the Midi setting and... it works again! It has now been working fine for about six weeks. Not sure about the Midi setting, but worth checking anyway. Good luck to the rest of you.

For me - used wrong power cord
by: Anonymous

Took my keyboard out of storage, plugged it in, lights went on, but no sounds - LCD display also flashed briefly but otherwise didn't work. Turned out I had plugged it in with an AC/DC Adapter (lost my original cord) -- when I tried an AC Adapter that I had lying around, this worked.

NOT A storage issue
by: Anonymous

Open layer traces on the PC board do not happen from storing the keyboard in your basement for a few months. How often you play the instrument has nothing to do with open layer traces either.

Most likely event is someone damaged the unit by accidental tug or trip over wires, or neglectful use (not a storage issue).

same problem with my Korg
by: Anonymous

I had the same problem with my Korg. I don't know anything about electronics but a Korg repair person wrote on my receipt "Repaired open layered traces." Apparently he told me this happens quite often when you don't use the keyboard for some time and it's left in a damp area. Looking at my circumstance he is exactly right, that is what happened. I left it in the basement where it's damp and I didn't use it for months. If you don't want to play, it's good just to put it on for a bit every once in awhile.

I'm having the same problem. It may be related to the headphone plug. If there is a headphone plug in (or the plug has failed), the audio will not play through the speakers.

Checking it out now. I'll post what I find.
