memory card reader for Yamaha psr 2100

by Archer Goconite
(Kolkata, West Bengal, India)

hi,

I have Yamaha Psr 2100 model. Over the recent years floppy drives and disk have become completely obsolete. With pen drive and memory card in existence, they are no longer in use.
But since the model has only a floppy reader its quite irritating of being unable to connect it to a laptop since the same has a usb port and memory card reader but not a floppy drive.
So is there any hardware device which can be connected to the model for facilitating the use of usb drives and memory card instead of floppy.

USB instead of floppydrive
by: Dick Rector

Hello Archer,

Yes there is! Look up in this forum about diskdrive replacements. I have written many times about it!
If you send me your mailaddres I will send you a zipfile with all the info about the USB-floppy-emulator. The thing cost 100 US$ + 20 US$ postage by DHL. I am NOT the vendor however and have NOTHING to do with him.
Connecting a floppydrive to a USB-port on a computer is also no problem. You can buy for about 20 US$ an external floppydrive with USB connection.

I hope this helps you.

psr 2000 floppy emulator
by: Anonymous

I also ordered a USB floppy emulator from a vendor online and it came with NO instructions...I am also pretty good with electronics/computers etc...and did successfully get the emulator installed in my PSR2000...the LEDs come on...flash...but no matter how I format the USB stick, I seems unable to read the stick.

I suppose the older CPUs in the PSR2000 series need the USB to be formatted in some specific way to read it...chunks the size of the floppy drive, probably...but try as I may, I cannot make it work...Can you offer an suggestions? I bought this emulator from a supplier in china. It was a plug and play device for the psr 2000 keyboard. I open up a line of discussions with them which is very confusion. Bob in Mcallen, Texas USA

I ordered a USB floppy emulator from a vendor online (not Trung)...and, it came with NO instructions...I am pretty good with electronics/computers etc...and did successfully get the emulator installed in my trusty old PSR2000...the LEDs come on...flash...but no matter how I format the USB stick, I seems unable to read the stick...Nothing wrong with the emulator...I tried it in an old WinXP Pentium III computer in place of the floppy drive and it WILL read the USB stick into the computer...I suppose the older CPUs in the PSR2000 series need the USB to be formatted in some specific way to read it...chunks the size of the floppy drive, probably...but try as I may, I cannot make it work...Can you offer an suggestions? I'd hate to go back to the old floppy drive at this point...

Switch mod for USB-Floppy-Emulator
by: Thomas

For all those with soldering skills, that don't want to wait for an email reply here is the solution to install an additional Switch in your USB-Floppy-Emulator:

1. Cut the Pin 34 in the drive.
2. Solder a switch between Pin 10 and the FDC side of Pin 34 you've just cut (the side connecting to the Keyboard).
3. Mount the switch somewhere on the frontpanel of the Emulator.

Now that you have the switch installed just close the switch to change disks and open it again to signal the keyboard that the new disk was loaded!

I got my emulator on EBay from Virtual Village. Without the additional switch I was never able to change disks as the Keyboard is permanently accessing the Floppy drive and therefore the emulator wont allow a disk change!

USB instead of floppydrive
by: Dick Rector

Hi Monique,

Good to hear that you are still happy with your piano.
Re your question:
As far as I know, this drive works in ALL Yamaha keyboards and (older model) piano's still using floppy-drives.
Trough the articles above I have been sending the info-zip-file to many hundreds of people all over the world and have not heard of ANY problem with a Yamaha.
If you send me your email-address I am more than happy to send you this info file.
It includes lots of information, some pictures of the build in box in various keyboards and a small software-program that you will need for this Emulator to work.
I can't put this lot on the forum as it is to bulky.
Although my mail-address is mentioned before, here it is ones more.

Yamaha CVP 900 Baby Grand Piano
by: Monique

Hello There Dick;
Wow - this is an amazingly informative site! Thank you kindly for taking the time to post all this invaluable information to folks like me who need assistance on this very subject.

I have a fabulous Yamaha CVP 900 Baby Grand Piano that I purchased in November 2003, and I just love it... It looks the same today as the day I bought it from the store, but of course, with the passing of time, technology changes and floppy disk drives are a thing of the not so distant past, and more of a hindrance to deal with, especially when you have hundreds of midi files, as is the case with me. Having said this, would you be able to advise if the Floppy Drive Emulator would work on my Baby Grand Piano as well as the Yamaha PSR keyboards?

I would hate to have to go and spend another twelve thousand dollars just to update to newer technology when my piano still looks and sounds fabulous. I sure would appreciate your thoughts on the above at your earliest convenience. Thank you in advance...
Kind Regards;
Monique

USB instead of floppydrive
by: Dick Rector

Hi Andersen83

Re your question about the software. I am sometimes in contact with the vendor and he has promised to let me know when an update is available.
So far there is none and I am afraid we all have to work our way around with this to my taste a bit clumsy software for windows.
On the other hand it works and you must admit that this USB-drive is a better solution than changing floppy's all the time in now harder to get drives as it was in 'the old days'.
You know, instead of an USB-stick, you can also use a card-reader attached to the USB-socket on the box? Formatting etc. works the same way.
Personally I don't see a great plus-point in it but others might do.
Until better days!

Regards
Dick

First of all I just want to say what a great product this is !! :)

But does anyone know if there's been made a more update version of the tool needed to format the memory stick on the PC??

It works great on XP, but Vista/Win7 the tool can't get access to the stick for browsing the differernt blocks or create new ones.

USB instead of floppydrive
by: Dick Rector

Hi Ken and others,

The keyboards you've mentioned are using probably the older Shugart protocol, that is in short the communication between motherboard and the FDD (floppydrive).
That does NOT work with this emulator. FULL STOP
I have mentioned this in my information-file to well over 200 people now.
It will work as far as I know in all Yamaha digital piano's and keyboards with an FDD, including the Tyros 1.
Also it works in the Roland E50, KORG PA50 and the GEM WK2. Maybe in lot others as well but that I don't know.

I am NOT the vendor but here is the Ebay address where you can order these Emulators:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Floppy-Drive-Emulator-Roland-E50-Yamaha-PSR-KORG-/170521211637?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item27b3db32f5

There are more places offering emulators but keep in mind that you need an emulator with an extra switch or it will NOT work in a keyboard!

Hope you find this helpful and if someone wants to know more about it just let me know.
My email-address is mentioned a few times.

Regards
Dick

USB Floppy
by: Nilo Rosa

Ola .. always believed that this conversion would be possible, that is, we could adapt a USB reader in the floppy, but several people here in Brazil did not believe it. Now that is possible, help us, I have 30 years of keyboard, and I have two yamaha keyboards and want to do this exchange. Where can I find this product and what brand?? I found the IPCAS, I can use it too? Much appreciated, I live in Curitiba-Paraná-Brazil, and my email is Thanks and congratulations.

Lingo expert??

My name is Dick Rector and I have nothing to do with the the second comment. That is just coming form another enthusiast user, and with a good reason. I have been writing on this forum many times to hopefully be of assistance for other keyboard players.
If you have comments please don't do that with not giving a name, it is only polite. The (non)use of capitals in your comment by the way is pretty bad for an EXPERT in lingo.

No More Disks!!
by: Ken Lass Barrington RI

I just got mine in the mail. Installed it and tested it. I am totally satisfied. I was thinking of buying the PSR 900 only because it had the USB capability. Don't have to now. I can't believe it. I'm putting about 30 songs per disk. It has 100 disk capability. You do the math. You are obviously searching the internet, so compare the price at the same time.

Floppy-USB-emulator
by: Dick Rector

Short while ago I wrote on this forum it was NOT possible but the good news is now YES IT IS POSSIBLE!
I changed my floppydrive to a Floppy-USB emulator (for my PSR2000) 1 week ago and it works perfect.
It doesn't matter what keyboard it is, it should work for all with a normal floppy-drive.
Here is the link you should go to to order:

trungtal@gmail.com

It holds the content of max. 100 floppies on a 256MB flash-drive.
The price is 100 US$ + postage by DHL (about 20US$)
If you want first more info send me your mailaddress (anyone who is interested is welcome to do so)because there are a few minor 'tricky' things with this box I discovered. To much to write here. But I am very happy with it!
