Keyboard samples to Garageband

by Mark West
(Portland, OR,USA)

I do a lot of recording on Garageband 08, on an IMac OS 10.5.6. I recently purchased a Yamaha DGX 620 because I really liked the instrument sounds that it produces. The problem that I'm having is that I can't seem to get these sounds to come through the computer. I have downloaded the latest Yamaha to Mac driver and try installing it several times. It will act as a controller for the Garageband samples but won't let me play a cool violin solo from the keyboard sounds. I'm more of a musician than a tech, so I'm pretty sure that it's just some step that I am missing. Any help you folks can give me would be greatly appreciated. THanks!

Hello,
I've just ended up in the same boat as you.. I've a yamaha keyboard and an imac running 10.5.5. The thing is, the last driver from yamaha issued for the imac (feb 08)only covers 10.2.8 to 10.5.4 so I'm stuffed until yamaha release another update..grr arrgh

After sending a message to Yamaha about this dilemma, a tech from Yamaha actually called me (very cool). He explained that the USB/midi connection from the keyboard to computer will only send a midi signal NOT an audio signal. To get my cool violin solo to the computer, I needed to run a 1/4" stereo plug from the keyboard headphone jack to an audio interface and record it as an analog signal. This is okay for me because I record most of my instruments as real instruments, not midi.

I hope that the answer I found helps anyone else who might find themselves with the same problem. Thanks to all for your time and consideration.
