Yamaha ypt-300 review

by David
(Florida, USA)

(Yamaha ypt-300 review)

The majority of reviews I have read have been positive and for the most part I agree with most of them. There is one item that has not been addressed, namely the key action being touch sensitive and light which it is, however the touch sensitivity varies in accordance to where exactly the position of the finger touches the key. In other words if the key is pressed at the extreme front of the key it requires just a light touch, however if the finger moves along the length of the key from front to rear then the pressure needed to operate the key increases dramatically as one nears the rear of the key. For beginners this may not be a problem since most playing utilizes simple music with little demand on legato style fingering.

In summary touch sensitivity of the keys is not constant along the length of the keys. As an accomplished adult pianist I find this quirk very annoying since not only do I have to play the correct key but I have to know where exactly my finger will be on the key when I press it and to compute (in my mind) how hard I must press it to get the same touch sensitivity needed as when playing the same note at the 'light' end of the key. A bigger problem is that as the finger playing happens to land close to the rear of the key so much pressure is needed to be applied to the key to operate it that the key becomes impossible to use.

Other than this I give this keyboard a great rating and good value.
