(Yamaha) YPT vs PSR models

by Laura
(Cupertino)

My child has just started learning and I am looking for a very basic entry level keyboard (I have YPT-220 in mind).
1.) IS YPT-220 good enough for beginners?

2.) How does YPT-220 compare with PSR E223? I checked the Yamaha website and I could not see any difference.

3.) Is their any major difference between YPT and PSR models?

4.) Costco has a YPT-220 package and read the reviews that the stand is not too good. Any reviews feedback etc.?

5.) How far into the Piano/Keyboard training do they need a touch sensitive keyboard? For ex: if they are following the Alfred's Piano Books, at which book stage would touch sensitive be required?

what to buy
by: d

Hi Laura,

Difficult to answer. Matter of taste, space and budget mainly.

Something general about beginners-keyboards/piano's:
The CVP is a large arranger keyboard with 88 keys with key-action. It has good piano-sounds and can do most as, for example a PSR S910 can do but is not very portable.

The CLP is a digital piano and NOT an arranger keyboard, it has no styles and no accompaniment build in. It has also less voices but does have all the midi voices build in to play back midi-songs but they can NOT be played from the keyboard itself. It is cheaper than the CVP.

The PSR E223 is a very basic keyboard with little possibilities. The keys are NOT touch-sensitive and you can not load external files.

PSR E413 and PSR 423 are very good starter keyboards and as the 423 is a ‘basic’ arranger keyboard you can load and ‘tweak’ external styles etc.
I don't know much about the models you've mentioned.

The best thing is to see your dealer and have the various models demonstrated.
You also can download the manuals for the various keyboards and compare them.

For manuals go to:

Dick
