Yamaha MOTIF ES8 - Error when saving songs to USB

by Richard Robinson
(Lindsay CA)

The Yamaha Motif ES8 will not save to some USB drives. One message says "Read Only File" and another message says "Unknown Error -1" when trying to format the drive.

Any help?

Not saving to USB
by: Dick Rector

Hi Richard,

Something wrong with these Flash-sticks if others do work?
First of all, I have nothing to do with Yamaha or any other brand and I am not familiar with your keyboard but I would advice you to have a good look at the pages in your manual dealing with loading files from and to an USB-stick.

However, I have a few general keyboard points that maybe are helpful.
Did you try another stick?
Is it a very large in GBytes stick, some keyboards don't like them!
Did you format the stick IN your keyboard? In some cases you have to.
Do the files have a xxxx.MID or xxxx.KAR or xxx.sty extension?
If not, change the extension and see if that works. (Songs are midi-files btw)
Can you see the mentioned files on the stick when you put it in your computer and play them AS MIDI for instance in a program like VanBasco's Karaokeplayer (Free to download)?
Can you copy from your computer to the bandit stick? If yes, some setting on the keyboard or the communication with the stick is wrong.

Not sure about this but I have heard that a maximum of 70 folders with about 250 files in each folder will load in a Yamaha..... If there are more files or folders the keyboard will not read/write to it anymore, solution:
you have to make or less folders and/or less files in each folder.
Only guessing on long distance of course!

Sorry I can't give you a better advice and I hope you sort out the problem soon. Usually it is just a minor thing. I hope I've put you on the right 'track' so to speak.

Dick
