Yamaha motif 8 frozen... then blank screen on reboot

by Ri3
(Chicago)

My Motif 8 was frozen in multi-timbral mode. After rebooting the screen is lit but blank.
It stills "sends" optical signal which is recognized but no sound.

Frozen Motif 8
by: Alfred

Dear Ri3: Just a suggestion. Try INITIALIZING the unit. It may work. Please post a message in this Forum if you are successful. It will be useful for other participants. Thanks and good luck.

More Motif 8 troubleshooting
by: Ri3

Thanks for the re-initialize suggestion... I was hesitant about this due to the fact that I have tons of custom templates that would be lost. However, while troubleshooting, I found that the display returns back to normal after unplugging the midi cables from Sound Blaster Live Drive IR (I had previous done some troubleshooting with the sound card to fix an audio problem and reloaded the drivers). The SB Live diagnostics show that everything, including midi, is working properly. The same is true with Windows device manager. Further troubleshooting showed that when the midi out cable from the computer is connected to the Motif8 the keyboard can be played manually but not via midi sequence. When the midi in from the computer is plugged back into the Motif, there is a "Midi Error" message and the display freezes again and upon rebooting, is blank again. My next step is to pick up a simple USB midi connector and disable the midi from the sound card. The mystery continues....

Motif 8 Mystery
by: Alfred

Dear Ri3: That was a speedy response. You've given me a clear lesson on aspects of trouble-shooting procedure, and I thank you for it. Your thought re the USB MIDI Connector may just be the answer, and I hope it is. If not, I hope some better=informed Forum member will come to the rescue with a solution. Good luck.
