Yamaha DGX-630 Recording MIDI

by Jess
(Melboure)

When I record my Yamaha DGX-630 as an audio track in Pro Tools it sounds perfect. But when I record it as MIDI information it plays back in a diminished quality, could this be something to do with the XGlite tone generator? Perhaps MIDI information doesn't recognize the XGlite tone generated effects? Any thoughts or ideas about the DGX-630 MIDI and Pro Tools would be much appreciated.

Thin sound on the computer
by: Dick Rector

Hi Jess,

A computer soundcard (unless you have special one) can NOT reproduce MIDI-voices outside the 127 voices in the GM (general midi)range. So the excellent XG-, Meta- and Articulated voices etc. will sound very 'thin' (or not at all) on your computer. They will be replaced in most cases by voices in the GM-range.
However the 'information' will be there in your saved midi-file. After editing and playing it back in the KEYBOARD it will sound as it should be.

Dick
