DGXG 520 screen defect. Factory design fault.
by: John Price

I also have a Yamaha DGX 520 keyboard with a faulty screen. The same faults described by others (half screen). I would have expected that all those on this site should have been contacted by Yamaha with an offer from themselves to replace the screen.

It’s a factory fault, and the screen, plus whatever caused it to breakdown, needs to be attended to, including the cable that leads to it.

Who do I go to to get it repaired.

I write to the factory, they sent my letter to the South African agent who said such a free repair offer has expired. This is nonsense, and not good for Yamaha’s good reputation.

Any advice??

DGX520 Screen
by: Anonymous

I got my DGX520 around 2008 or later and learned recently that model was a phased out model when I got it from Best Buy. I have the same issues with the LCD screen. The problem was intermittent so I didn't think much of it. It's gotten worst recently and turned unreadable when the weather gets very humid. I'm very disappointed that Yamaha only offered 50% off for a technical defect due to cheap materials they've used. Another guy in this thread got the screen for free, what's with the discrimination?

YAMAHA DGX 520 Screen Problem
by: Anonymous

Have the same problem with a DGX 520 with the vertical lines on the right side of the screen.
Contacted Yamaha customer support via email and explained the problem.

Even though the keyboard was purchased in 2008 and well past the warranty, they are providing a new screen at no charge. They provided also, several local repair shops that I could not find on line.

So, hats off to Yamaha, I wouldn't expect them to pay for parts and labor after six years.

If it costs $100 or $150 for labor it's well worth it because the board is working fine otherwise.

Hope this helps.

The display unit suffers from heat corruption of the cable linking it to the keyboard. The unit has to be replaced, but at least there is a fix for this. It seems this is a design fault and occurs frequently on this keyboard. So do not leave the keyboard on for longer than necessary to prolong the life of the cable.

factory reset
by: Dick Rector

Linda,

Look in the headphone outlet, is there an adapter forgotten to take out? That disconnects the onboard speakers.

If not, do a Factory reset but that will delete everything that might be in user area's, like you own recordings etc.

Unplug the power for 10 seconds.
Hold down the highest white key + the nearest 3 black keys. That should bring the keyboard back as it came out of the box.

If that doesn't help I am afraid you need a prof repair person to have a look at it.

Dick

installing the LCD
by: Anonymous

Unless Yamaha is shipping the LCD display "with" the interface board, this is not a plug-and-play installation. I have a reasonably broad background in component level electronics repair. I opened up my recently acquired DGX-520 to investigate the problem. The ribbon cable from the LCD display to the interface board is soldered. Since I no longer own my repair business, I didn't have the best solder pencil on my bench, but decided to resolder it anyway. Bad idea. I'm pretty sure there are surface mount diodes on each solder run and I may have cooked them with the heat.

If in fact they are shipping the two parts, (the LCD and the interface or driver board) then it is pretty simple to install. Just pay careful attention to the bends in the old ribbon cables so you make sure you get pin 1 in the right space. Also make sure those cables are seated squarely before applying power.

Lines in the LCD ilke these are caused by individual digital inputs not getting properly applied to the screen. Each segment is driven by a set of inputs. Whoever wrote that it was because the liquid in the crystal was perhaps the problem was, I am afraid, in error in their understanding of how LCD's work.

I'm going to try to rework mine this weekend, but I suspect the real issue is either the brown, (more brittle) data cable to the actual LCD or where it is actually connecting within the LCD panel.

DGX-520 Blank Screen
by: Ken

I inherited my DGX-520 from my mother who rarely used it. It was working fine then the LCD went out. I was getting vertical lines on the left side and nothing. I am a guitarist so I don't use it much but it is the only KB in my studio.

I tried cycling power over and over ( as read in another post) and occasionally get the left side of the screen appearing on the right. I have some electronics background and know that this KB was never dropped or mishandled. Any one have luck re-seating the LCD cables? How hard is it to disassemble this unit? What a pain...

Did you try low humidity?
by: Anonymous

I have the same problem with my DGX-520, but I noticed something. During the winter, when there is low humidity, the screen was perfectly fine. TRy finding a low humidity area in your home and letting it rest there for a day then turn it on in that location. Since it is an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) the liquid inside the screen may have been exposed to humidity, causing the distortion or the lines on the screen.

The End is Near?
by: Jack

My DGX-520 is a bit over 2 years old now.

At some point I started with the same random vertical lines problem, appearing on both left and right sides of the display several months ago. I lived with it because it gradually cleared up if the keyboard was operated long enough and the Power key recycled about a hundred times.

Ultimately the symptom has become fatal changing at first to become a blank screen on one half or the other until last night when the LCD backlighting is the only thing I have. Now the LCD display has quit all together.

I suspect a $300 repair for a $500 keyboard is not in the cards.

DGX-520 Keyboard's screen is messed up, what do I do?

Hi, I have had a Yamaha DGX-520 keyboard for a while (Past thw arranty). One morning, I got up, turned it on, and the screen was wacked, and it has been that way for three months.
It has graphical errors, sometimes the screen shows up in some lines on the screen, usually is random white lines on a blue background, and sometimes is just blue. I can switch tones and stuff still, just the display has gone mad.

What can I do to fix this?

Yamaha Keyboard Display problem

I had the same display problem, resulting in my display eventually turning completely black. I reset the factory settings, but this did not correct the problem. I think someone had mentioned a contact in the display as possibly being a problem. I ran my finger across the display, adding light pressure - and my display came up. I have not had any problems since; this was a year ago. I know this isn't a technical solution, but I figured what could it hurt...and it worked.

Yamaha Keyboard Display Problem
by: Anonymous

Yeah this same thing happened to me... Frustration eventually overcame me and I decided to take the thing apart to figure out what was wrong with it. At first I couldn't find anything that was making this happen, until i wiggled the two ribbon connectors that run out of the lcd screen. I noticed that the picture would come in and out, I got it to work for a little while, however when I put the whole thing back together, my fix soon became usless. So you might get lucky by just wiggling those two ribbons if you dare, but I wouldnt recommend it, waste of time, and not even worth it. Yamaha should be ashamed of themselves.

DISPLAY PROBLEM WITH SGX MODELS
by: Anonymous

Regarding the factory reset - you hold down the highest key (c) as you hit the power button. Caution though - when you reset, you erase any saved settings and music saved on User Song 1-5.
And it does not correct the display problem. This info is found in the manual.

Regarding the vertical lines on display:
After reading the many comments regarding the display flaw that seems to exist on many SGX models, I talked to my husband (engineer, but not electronics) about replacing the display. He thought he might be able to replace the display. So, I decided to mess with the display a little; since it might need replacing anyway and it couldn't get any worse than it was. I turned power on and ran my finger over the display. You will see the movement within the display. At first, the lines on the right side lightened. Did the finger procedure again and the lines moved to the left side; and the right side was clear. Did it again and the entire display had vague lines, but was readable. Thought, OK I can live with this. Next time I turned power on, the display was completely cleared up. I'm guessing the pressure of my finger had some affect on the contacts. I know, it's not scientific, and probably not a permanent cure, but it worked. And for now, I am able to use the functions.

C and F sharp not touch sensitive
by: Jacqueline

I have had my DGX-520 for over 4 years now and it's worked perfectly all this time.
However today when I turned it on to play, i noticed all the C notes and all the F sharp are not touch sensitive. It is very strange - why would all the Cs and all the F sharps suddendly stop being touch sensitive.
When I turn off the touch sensitivity for the entire keyboard - obviously all the notes sound the same. It is only when the touch sensitivity is on that you can notice that the Cs and F sharps have no touch sensitivity at all and play really loud even when I just slighly hit them.
Please provide advice on what I can do to solve this problem. I have reset all the settings (but turning the piano on whilst holding the highest note) but this does not help.
I really appreciate anyone's comments.

Hey Ryan,
I dont know exactly what the buttons are myself, but I heard from someone that theres a way to push certain buttons on the keyboard to take it back to the factory default so it acts like it was the day it was bought. However any songs recorded on the keyboard would be gone.. If anyone knows the buttons to push for that post it on here that could be something to try before taking your keyboard in for repairing.

check it out. If you feel more comfortable using a Yamaha repair shop, go to......................

Logic Studio 9 and DGX-520 keyboard

I am trying to access the gorgeous sounds of my DGX-520 from Logic Studio 9, but all it seems to be able to access are the GM (General MIDI) sounds which are not nearly as good as, say, the default piano sound.

Is there a way to have Logic control the main sounds of the DGX-520? I am fearing that Logic 9 will only access GM on external gear but I hope I'm wrong.

Intrument definition file
by: Harry Cats

I had the same issue using my dgx620 with Sonar (Cakewalk). After a bit of Googling, i learned, that the programm needs to have a INSTRUMENT DEFINITION FILE installed. In this file (usualy a kind of textbased file) the programm is "told" how and where to access the special Yamaha voices and in wich banks they are to be found.

I have now a 630 (yes, 630, not 620) INS-file and now i can access all the sweet! and live! voices of my 620 as well within Sonar.

Yamaha DGX 620 display resurrection!
by: JP Lefebvre

I have bad AND good news...
Bad News:
Neither Canadian and USA Yamaha representative accepted to help me in any ways. So finally i must agree that it's the last time i buy Yamaha's products. It's a shame that they dont support their products more than that. Too bad my next synth will be Roland, Moog, Casio etc. If i want to repair i'll have to pay more than $200 plus custom fee $100 plus shipping and taxes $100...Forget it!!!
Good News:
Since i have nothing to loose, i took my soldering iron. I reheat all surface mount solders and with the soft and clean flat side of my soldering tip, i lick each glued flat ribbon. If your not in electronic business ask someone with very good skills with SMT soldering. I replug the display and voila it WORKS FINE!!!

dgx620 display
by: JB in Hamilton

I bought mine two years ago and the display went a year later. Now it's just the solid blue and white split screen. I like wild bill's info, thanks so much, I'll call those #s and see if I can fix it myself.

Yamaha QS 300
by: bojogcenik

I have a Yamaha QS 300 workstation. Bought it years ago and the lcd light wouldn't work anymore after a couple of years. Had some modifications done such as installing led's around the perimeter of the display to give some lighting but this only made it hot. Was done by an electronic enthusiast in Bali. I do remember once when the light went out for some time then later it came back on for a moment which suggested maybe a loose connection. Since then it doesn't work anymore. Always had to use a torch to see the display. Now the lcd itself is going funny with lines across the display. Had a technician service it and it was ok for a couple of months. Started playing up again. The keyboard has brilliant sounds and features and a shame if couldn't get the display working again. I can probably fix the problem with the broken lines but the problem is with the backlight. Is there some sort of replacement backlight strip that I can buy to install behind the existing display? I saw something on YOutube.

how to fix lcd on the dgx620
by: wild bill

call this number for parts 1-888-892-6242 . give them your keyboard number as dgx620. order the part-the lcd-send to you. take all the screws out of the back, and lift the back of the keyboard up, the is one cable you have to disconect to the speakers. lay the bottom aside. next pull the flat cables away from the mother board, make note where they plug in. take 4 screws out of the mother board and set it aside.take 4 screws out of the lcd and unplug all the cables attached to it and lift it out. reverse the process with the new lcd, being careful not to tighten the screws too tight as the threads are plastic. your done .good luck. for tech support call 714-522-9000- each key board may have a different number but just tell them what it is and they will get it for you.

LCD repair on Yamaha DGX 520
by: Alfred

Dear Newman: My limited "technical savvy" restricts me to the following comments. a)With Batteries, make sure they are FRESH. b)With Adaptor, have its OUTPUT checked. In both cases, low output (Energy) might be cause. I am not familiar with your unit, but you can try Initializing (Resetting) it, with no risk of further damage. IF your unit is anything like a PSR series unit, try two separate ways for a Reset. The first will perform a PARTIAL Initializing.
1) Turn the Unit OFF, then holding down the last White key, turn the Unit ON again. This will erase all Panel User Settings, Registration Memory, User Songs, Style File. This means all your backed up data.
2) The second is for total "Back-to-Factory" Initializing. For this, turn the Unit OFF, then holding down the last White Key plus the last three Black keys turn the Unit ON again. This will erase everything, literally restoring the keyboard to “Factory, Out-of-the-Box” condition. (Everything, including MIDI downloaded info will be erased).
The above, as mentioned, applies to PSR series units, but try it anyway as no harm will be done to yours. If the suggestions work, enjoy playing your keyboard. If the actions do not work, hopefully some other kind owner of a DGX 520 will help. Could you please post a message in this Forum, so other members can benefit from your experience. Keep well and good luck”.

Yamaha DGX 520 Display Problem
by: Alfred

Dear Chantell: 1) The dent in the speaker may not have anything to do with the problem. 2) One POSSIBLE contributor is the Adaptor, or the Socket in the Unit where you plug in the Adaptor. The PLUG of the Adaptor may be dirty. Clean it with Electronic Contact Cleaner (Squirt Can). While you are about this, also squirt a SHORT BURST into tyhe Socket and insert/withdraw the Adaptor Plug several times to ensure good contact is made. 3) The Adaptor itself may have degraded, try a new one. If these suggestions do not work, here's a Yamaha site for a local service which may help....
http://yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/Service/ServicerLocator/0,,VNM%3DLIVE,00.html

Have Model and Serial number at hand, and explain your problem. Charge(s)for any repair(s),should be well worth the investment, so that you can continue enjoying your unit.

.....or, you may prefer to contact a qualified electronic piano/keyboard technician.

Please do not hesitate to come back to us if you still have comments/questions (before or after you take any action). We will help as needed. Till then keep well.
Regards, Alfred

Hello Dinchel,

I have no idea but it is for sure something for a prof to have a look at.
Looks like a internal power-problem.

Transfering Music - Yamaha DGX520

by JAA
(Minneapolis, MN)

I have a DGX520. I can record, as I'm sure you know, up to 5 songs in the keyboard's song files.

After I've filled-up the 5 songs positions, I use Creative Wave Studio, and upload the songs there.

Now I have WAV files.

I have tried every way to take those WAV files and send them to a flash drive inserted into the keyboard.

I've loaded the Yamaha CD into my computer. However, whenever I try to load those songs into the flash drive in the keyboard, it always reads, File not found.

I know how to load one of those 5 songs I spoke of before to the flash drive, but that won't help me because I have too many other saved songs that I can't transfer because of the file not found message.

Isn't the any way I can load the files that I've already played on the keyboard onto the flash drive?

Display problem- good info
by: Big John

It is now 2015 and I have only just discovered this site. The little Knob on the back restored my display I didn't even know it was there! I have had the DGX 520 since new in 2007. Great machine. I read through all of the comments including all of the expensive and technical fixes including changing the card. Thank you Yamaha You have restored an old guy's confidence in both me and you. John

Transfering Music - Yamaha DGX520
by: Anonymous

Hi, I have PSR3000 and have been transfering songs played in keyboard using Flash Drive into the PC and it works everytime. Can be that your Flash Drive is full or not enough space. Can use Memory Card to transfer too. Try that.
