Sustain pedal on S30

by Billy
(Atlanta, GA, USA)

I have a Yamaha S30 keyboard and am trying to add a sustain pedal to it. The S30 doesn't have a "SUSTAIN" plug, but it has "FOOT CONTROLLER" and "FOOT SWITCH". I've tried attaching the pedal I have to both and playing with various CTRL settings both in the UTILITY menu and the VCE EDIT menu, but can't seem to get it to work at all.

Is it possible to add a sustain pedal to the S30? Do I need to have a Yamaha pedal? The one I'm using now is a Korg and not a Yamaha, so I was wondering if that was the issue. If it's possible with the pedal I have, how do I need to hook it up? Reading the manual (cover to cover a number of times now) has not helped me terribly much, and I can't find too much online through Google for the S30, so any advice you have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Billy

Sustain Pedal on S30
by: Alfred

Dear Billy: As I understand it, most Foot Pedals are simple On/OFF Switches, and there is no reason for the pedal not to work. While I am not familiar with the S30, it is possible that it has an Internal Polarity Sensor, probably in the FOOT SWITCH JACK into which I believe the pedal Plug must be inserted. Some Foot Pedals may have a polarity switch somewhere on their housings. Such may be the case with the Korg. Check. Next plug the pedal into the keyboard BEFORE turning it ON. DO NOT PRESS THE PEDAL AGAIN UNTIL THIS IS DONE. Power up the keyboard and play a melody, and while you are playing, step down on the pedal to "see" if it works. Please post a mesage in this Forum if my instructions resolve your problem. Other particpants will benefit from your comments. Thank you and good luck.

Yamaha S30 foot switch jack (sustain)

Hi guys, the S30 does not have automatic sensing of footswitch polarity. It needs a normally-closed switch on the pedal. Some pedals have a N.C./ N.O. slide switch on the bottom. (Music Industries PS-25 comes to mind) A lot of lever-style or piano-style pedals have this feature, you'll have to look for or ask about it.
