Purchase of a keyboard

by Roger
(Guernsey CI)

I looking to learn to play a piano and a keyboard seems the best approach due to space considerations, I would like advice regarding the type of keyboard I should purchase.
ie, Yamaha 323
" 423
NP-V80.
I am a complete beginner so would appreciate unbiased advice if another keyboard would be suitable.

what to buy
by: Dick Rector

Hi Roger,

To a complete beginner it is not so easy to advice what to buy as you probably don't understand the 'language' that is used. The very best advice is to go to a good dealer and have the keyboards demonstrated that fit within your budget and that you like the sound of.
As with everything, you get what you pay for.
Anyhow a few general points I know about and keep in mind this forum has nothing to do with Yamaha or any other factory.

The CVP is a large arranger keyboard with 88 keys with key-action.
It has good piano-sounds and can do most as, for example a PSR S910 (one of the higher end types) can do but is not very portable.

The CLP is a digital piano and NOT an arranger keyboard, it has no styles and no accompaniment. It has also less voices but does have all the midi voices build in to play midi-songs but they can NOT be played from the keyboard itself.
It is much cheaper than the CVP.

The PSR E223 is a very basic keyboard with little possibilities. The keys are NOT touch-sensitive and you can not load external files.

PSR E413 and PSR 423 are very good starter keyboards and as the 423 is a ‘basic’ arranger keyboard you can load and ‘tweak’ external styles etc.
If it suits you, the PSR 423 is the best choice but that is my opinion of course.

A digital Piano
by: Anonymous

If you are going to start playing piano then you should:
1) Think about how much money you want to spend;
2) Go to a local store and try some models;
3) Choose the one that best fit in you room/home in terms of dimmensions and confort;
4) Be aware to buy one DP tha has, at least, 1 (one) headphone jack (all DP's has this). 2 headphones are used for taking lessons (one for you, and other for the teacher) so if it is your case, think about this;
5) Check the "record" button and others interfaces (USB, MIDI, etc) because you will want to save your progress and music.
6) and finally, practice, practice, practice.
Good Luck.
