PSR550- USB DRIVE REPLACEMENT

by gorazd rakovec
(slovenia)

I am the owner of some oldest PSR 550 keyboard, using floppy drive for data storage.
I would like to find a solution to replace the old floppy drive for a USB drive.
On the market I have noticed product at:
http://www.rioc.us/ufr-usb-floppy-replacement.php

I have asked for more information on the compatibility of this replacement unit with my YAMAHA PSR 550, but the producer needs to know the following (part of it's answer):

""Yes, this replaces the floppy completely.
The procedure is to remove your floppy disk drive, and replace it with our device.
Our device is the same size and shape as a floppy disk drive with the same power and data connectors as a standard 34-pin floppy drive.

A couple of questions:
1) Is the floppy disk drive the same as what is used in a PC? Using 5v for power and a 34-Pin ribbon cable for data?
2) Can you read a floppy disk from this synthesizer on a regular Windows PC?
3) Are the floppy disks 1.44MB "HD" style? ""

CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THESE ANWERS?
OR, HAVE YOU OR, DO YOU KNOW ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVE?

diskdrive-usb?
by: Dick Rector

Hi there,

My advice is to look up psrtutorial.com first because you have the same question as many other psr-owners including myself. Yes, it is a bit of a hassle to change floppy's all the time but you can fit a lot of styles on one flop, so what do you want?
On this website, in the forum-part, you will find some comments from profs and people who bought this device and it seems not very effective and quit expensive for what it is. You will also find a lot of other useful information about Yamaha keyboards.
Maybe a bit older, but you've got a fine machine.
Keep enjoying playing it.

I can do, i can supply this device
by: Trung - VIETNAM

I'm successful in replacceing the floppy drive on PSR keyboard with the floppy drive emulator.

You will not ever need floppy disk. Your psr keyboard will read and write USB pen drive instead of floppy disk.

Price of the floppy drive emulator:US$100.00 without transport charge.

Payment: accept PAYPAL.
I can list this device on EBAY for you, if you want.

Floppy drive replacement on the PSR 550
by: Cobra2

Just use a standard PC floppy drive. I have done this and it works great. No issues with this replacement drive for over 1 year, maybe longer, I can't remember exactly when I replaced it.
I am a computer technician by trade and after contacting Yamaha about a replacement drive and being told that it would be over $100, I took the keyboard apart to see what would be different with this drive compared to a standard floppy drive for a PC. They both take the same floppy disk. I replaced the drive with a used floppy drive from an old PC and it works fine.
This will save you a ton of money over Yamaha's price. Yamaha will not tell you that it is a standard floppy drive or they would not be able to sell you a $20 drive for $100.
Hope this helps you.

USB instead of floppydrive
by: Dick Rector

Hello to you all who are still using a floppydrive.

I wrote something about replacing a floppydrive on this forum some time ago but I have good news for you!
I just bought this floppy-USB emulator from Trung in Vietnam. Arrived after 3 days with DHL!
I tell you IT WORKS PERFECT!!!

I replaced his 'wonderbox' in my PSR2000 (very easy) but it should work of course in any machine.
Connectors are exactly the same and a 256MB USB-Stick (you don't need more)after formatting with the tiny software program what comes with it, holds 100 floppy's.
Your keyboard reads 1 'emulated' floppy at the time as it was before.
But NO more moving parts, no floppys laying around anymore and you can take the USB-stick to your computer and work with it, as most newer computers don't have a floppy-diskdrive anymore.
To my taste this is THE answer to the older systems we have been looking for.
If you want more information (in Dutch or English) please feel free to mail me as long as it is not a question about the electronics, because I don't have a clou.

usb-floppy

Hallo PSR users !

I was buy the floppy emulator from Le Trung too.
It works in the psr2100 perfectly.
But other synths have problem with the unit.
Don't want work with Roland instruments. These use the old shugart-type interface, which have some pins and timing differendt .
I should be wondering if any have some practice with other brands (Korg, Roland,Solton,Ketron...)
I think the solution not a fulfill recipe, because these instruments uses the same Ju257 Panasonic (Or TEAC) fdd in different way by variable jumpers and swithes.
