Problem with a PSR220

I just got a PSR 220 from a friend, and it won't even power up. I have FRESH batteries, even got the thing plugged up, but when I hit the power button, the only thing that happens is at the top left, eight squares come up, full black squares, for however long I press the power button, when I let go of the button they disappear, nothing else happens..What's goin on??

Dear Jeremy: Yamaha released the PSR 220 in 1996.
While age should not necessarily mean much, the unit has perhaps given up the ghost. There are many components in a keyboard, and myriad causes for total or partial function failure. The cost of repair of yours is likely to be too high to be practical. If you already know how to play, or are serious about learning, one suggestion is to shop the internet for a new or used WORKING KEYBOARD (preferably with a Power Adaptor), or better still check Ebay for listings and bid on one with a RETURN OPTION to protect your investment.
