Problem connecting keyboard to computer

So I got a Yamaha psr e323 keyboard. Fascinated by the possibility of using the internet to add new songs and more things to the keyboard itself and mostly for the apparent easiness of recording MIDI instruments on cubase i bought a yamaha UX 16 Midi-usb cable.
So, i ran the cd on my computer (a asus g1s with windows vista) and when i pressed "instal" i got a firefox page saying i had to download the driver because i was running vista.
I followed the link and downloaded the suposed drive. In the end what i had was "Musicsoft Downloader" and i though that should be it...
I linked the keyboard to the pc and it tried to instal the hardware but i got a error and it asked me a folder to find the drive (i think) and pointed out the yamaha cd and i got a message saying the hardware was instaled corretctly.
Now comes the tricky part, this musicsoft downloader shows the midi in and out ports but when it checks connection always shows a error.
Cubase Sx also shows the Midi in and out ports but i dont know how to record anything, when press the red circle for recording it starts recording but when i stop the recording is erased...
Can anyone help me please?
1. What's wrong with my keyboard or computer
2. how do i record things from my piano to cubase
3. how can download and copy to the keyboard more rythims and songs
Thanks for reading.
Cheers
