(ALASKA)

HELLO I WAS JUST GIFTED A CLAVINOVA CLP-350. THE POWER COMES ON BUT THERE IS NO SOUND. I OPENED IT UP BOTH FUSES LOOK OK. UM AS FOR THE OUTPUTS THE HEADPHONES DON'T WORK, THE OUT PUTS ON THE BACK DON'T WORK, AND THE INTERNAL SPEAKERS DON'T WORK, ALSO WHEN I FIRST TURN IT ON I GET A CRACKEL SOUND THROUGH THE SPEAKERS OR THE HEADPHONES IF THEY ARE PLUGED IN, OR OUT OF THE OUTPUTS ON MY AMP. THE SOUND CRACKES FOR ABOUT THREE SECONDS THEN NOTHING. SO ANYHELP? I JIGGLED ALL THE WIRES AND ALL THE POINTS SEEM SOLID. ALSO HAVE A STICKY MIDDLE C. ANY HOW TO FIX WHILE SHES OPEN.

Hi. I have a Korg Concert (= yamaha clavinova) bought damaged, a broken cooper track in card in the memory area (ADDRESS BUS) was the problem, now I have the same, I supposed that another track is damaged, the age. But i'm looking for schematics.

Dear Nick: Try oaktreevintagesales.com they are dealers in older keyboard parts and may have the fuse. As to a service center, contact Yamaha at

http://yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/Service/ServicerLocator/0,,VNM%3DLIVE,00.html

Hope you succeed in restoring the unit. Be sure to let us know the results. Good luck and thanks.

well i started pokin around I blew a fuse. Now where do I get a new one. Also how do I find a service center in alaska or anywhere. I googled for two hours now, nothing comes up. I think it looks like a dry socket like you said. It heats up on the amp and went dry. I'll solder tomorrow but now I need a new fuse. Where oh where do I get one??????????

Dead keyboard or.....?
by: Dick Rector

Nick,

Alfred gave you, no doubt the best advice.
When I read your problems, and mind it is just guessing! After you have checked all the cable connections, it sounds to me as a 'rotten' or semi-loose soldering somewhere, or a half-dead component. When you switch on you hear a crackling noise, that sounds like electric sparks between contacts. After a few seconds it stops by heating up and by extending the 'gap'.
Look carefully at the solderings where the power comes in, indeed usually near the fuses! quite often the problem is there. Converting power to a low voltage can generate quite some heat and that might have been effecting a soldering-point.
Not easy to find without the correct equipment and knowledge. But as I said, I am only guessing.

Hope you solve the problem and it would be helpful to the readers of this forum if you give some feedback when you found the problem so we can all learn from it.

Good luck
Dick

Clavinova CLP 350
by: Alfred

Dear Nick: I'm answering your post as best I can, and I hesitate to suggest any "Long distance diagnosis", but maybe some other better-qualified member(s) can advise you.
You may know that the CLP 350 was released in 1988. Age is not necessarily a source of all your problems. I happen to be the original owner of a Yamaha DK 40 C Spinet released in 1976, and the only problems I've had were three occasions where the fuses had to be changed. It's possible that back then quality came first! As to your unit, I recommend you consider 1) What a QUALIFIED KEYBOARD TECHNICIAN might charge to restore it. 2) Work on it yourself,if you have the skill, test equipment, tools and source for replacement parts etc. 3) Search the internet. You might find a Service Manual which would be a big help. Good luck.
