My Yamaha Clavinova CVP 207 won't start.

by Jeri

My Yamaha CVP 207 has been working great. I have tons of songs saved from my kids and piano students. Just this morning I recorded a bunch of songs with students. An hour and a half later I turned it on but it wouldn't start and gave me an error message that the power off had been wrong somehow and that my user data is lost. I don't remember the exact words. Now it won't start at all. I get to the Yamaha logo screen and it won't do anything. I'm sick about losing the recordings and that it won't start. What can I do?

Reset
by: Dick Rector

Hi Jeri,

Oh boy, didn't you make backups!! You have NEVER enough!

I'm not familiar with your model but here are some hints.

RESET FOR MOST KEYBOARD:
There are two ways to reset your keyboard.

1. Is what I call a mild reset and that deletes everything in the on-board flash-memory that wasn’t saved in user-area’s or on a flash-stick or so.
You can use that anytime and some people (like me) do this reset almost every time I power up my keyboard to make sure it is a ‘fresh’ start.
-Hold down the most right white key while powering up. This takes only a few seconds.
That’s all!

2. The second method is a different story.
It will bring your keyboard back to the status as it was when it came out of the box (unless something is really broken of course!)
This is a FACTORY reset and you should only perform this if the keyboard is really confused and acting strangely.
-Unplug the power for 10 seconds
Hold down the same most right white key PLUS the nearest 3 black keys while powering up.
Keep in mind!!!!!
This action will delete EVERYTHING that is stored in User-Area’s, like your songs, home made voices, registrations etc. including the owners name (depending on the model). So make BACKUP’S first if still possible if you have some work saved.

You don’t have to worry about all the internal factory-styles and voices etc, these are stored in non-erasable memory and will be still there.

If this is not bringing your keyboard back to life as it should be, you need a qualified (preferable a Yamaha trained) repair-person.

!!!!!! Extensive Self test!!!!!
This test works only on SOME models!
WARNING it will delete everything in the user-area’s
Hold down C# F G# in second octave while switching on.
When open use TEMPO + and – to select a test.
Use START/STOP to activate that test (some take a bit longer to finish)
Shows OK if good or NG when NOT GOOD.
If there is no response from a test, press most left white key to exit that particular test.
If you are not skilled or a technician, it will not say much but at least you can see IF there is something wrong when you get a NG.

Learned the Hard Way
by: Jeri

Dick,

Thank you for the suggestions. Yes, I was in complete error to have not backed up everything. I had done some but not all. The machine has a 3.5" floppy drive which is not the most current mode of saving files. So I had put it off due to not having the equipment to save them through the computer jack. That will change. I was able to get the piano to start again and all seems fine as far as internal settings. My user-created folders were still there but sadly, all recordings in them were gone. I back up computer files three times over. I trusted the Clavinova too much.
