MIDI TRANSFER

I have a Windows 98 Computer. A M-AUDIO Uno Midi 1input/1output. I have downloaded the M-Audio Software into the computer. I have followed the manual instructions for the Yamaha Midi transfer but I cannot get it to work. The Input and Use of the Midi is working..but no Output. PLEASE HELP. I am a musician dying to edit and fortify all these great songs and I'm spending all my time pulling my hair out. In addition, what is the best application or software for Midi Editing using the Yamaha DGX 500 especially when keeping the format of the original measures.

And yes...it goes to MIDI.. select 1 ... then goes all the way to the END step but no files are on my computer.
