Is a PA-6 AC power adapter interchangeable with a PA-5B/5C/ 51, for use on my PortaTone PSR 240 Keyboard?

by Elizabeth
(Charlotte, NC)

I have found my PA-6 power adapator that we evidently purchased (separately) when we bought out PSR 340 several years ago. But now I am concerned: The specs in the Owners Manual for my keyboard say to use a Yamaha PA-5B, PA-5C, or a PA-51 power adaptor. I'm guessing that the PA-6 adapter came out after our keyboard was manufactured. But I can't remember having ever actually plugged it into the keyboard in the past, so I'm not sure if this PA-6 might mess up the PSR 340 in some way. Does anyone know? Thanks!

reply re PA-6
by: Dave S

Sorry, but the previous advice is complete rubbish.

The current rating is the maximum that the power unit can supply. The PA-6 is capable of supplying a higher current than the PA-5, but would only do so if the keyboard needed it.

I use a PA-6 instead of a specified PA-5 on my Yamaha sound module.

As long as the voltage rating and polarity is the same (which it is) yopu will have no problems.

Adaptor for Yamaha PSR 240
by: Alfred

Dear Elizabeth: The PA6 Adaptor has a current Output of 2 Amp. which is somewhat high for the PSR 240. The PA 5 B/C adaptors have outputs of 700 mA.
Using the PA 6 may work, but the music likely to lose some fidelity (too loud or too low passages) and the internal circuitry may be affected. If I were you, I'd just buy a new adaptor from Yamaha. Thanks for the visit, and do come back often. Keep wrll.
