Good Beginner Yamaha Keyboard for Child?

by Larry
(California, USA)

Hi,

I'm looking for a good used Yamaha keyboard for my 10 y/o daughter. She plays the flute in her school's band and has expressed an interest in learning piano.

In searching local Craigslist ads, I frequently see Yamaha PSR keyboards for sale, and not knowing anything about them I'm wondering which one is most appropriate for her. For example, right now there is a PSR-290 and a PSR-230, both well under $100. Would either of these be a good choice? Any other recommendations? Thank you!

Flautist Prodigy & Yamaha PSR's
by: Alfred

Dear Larry: Let’s see if I can be of help. 1) Whether your daughter reads music or not, most of the portable Yamaha keyboards provide instructions for beginners. They include self taught fingering (individual left from right) plus Displays showing what is being done. 2) In addition to Craig’s lists consider Ebay [Enter PSR on Ebay]. 3) ONLY CONSIDER a purchase which a) Guarantees 100% condition, b) Includes an Owner’s Manual – even though Yamaha’s manuals stink, c) CD ROM Disc if applicable, d) Power Adaptor to save on cost of Batteries, e) Return Option, f) Good Ebay rated Seller feedback. I have two PSR’s and both are excellent. One, the PSR E 403, normally elicits a final winning bid of about $150 to $ 180, but it features a few more functions allowing the player to become accustomed to higher-end keyboards in the event upgrading is eventually desired. I hope this info is helpful, and invite you to join us in comments/questions in this friendly Forum. Good luck.
