For a beginning student, what are the main differences between a YDP (223) and comparable Clavinova? Would you recommend one over the other?

Alfred said it, find a dealer for a demo because it is all a matter of personal taste and of course budget.

You can download the manuals in PDF format and look in detail for yourself the differences between the two. If you are a beginner it is maybe not so easy to understand but a good dealer will tell AND show you the stuff.
