Brand new Digital Piano Yamaha P-85 doesn't turn on...

by Lhizzie
(Manila, Ph.)

When my new P-85 Yamaha was brought home, I plugged it in and was able to play for a few minutes. But then while playing it suddenly just turned off by itself and won't turn back on again. I then started to worry and try to find a way for troubleshooting from the manual and checked the AC adaptor as well. At the AC power adaptor, it says that the input should be 120v - 1.5A. The standard outlets in my apartment are 220v. I don't seem to get it to work. I then plugged it in again on a voltage surge protector and it still doesn't turn on. Please help me find a solution to this. It's a special gift that was given to me for Christmas.. I hope I didn't do any damage to it.

Yamaha P 85

Dear Lhizzie: The least serious problem is likely to be the AC Power Adaptor. You state that it is rated for 120 Vac, and that your apartment outlets are for 220 Vac. Right there you have an immediate mismatch. The Adaptor may have been one with an adjustor for use either with 220 Vac or 120 Vac and you may have overlooked setting it for 220 Vac As a result you probably have burned out the Adaptor. If my presumption is correct, and if you are lucky, that will be the only problem, and all you will have to do is BUY A NEW IDENTICAL ADAPTOR AND MAKE SURE YOU SET IT FOR 220 VAC. It is possible, but unlikely any harm has been done to the keyboard itself, as the mismatched voltages probably just burned out the Adaptor. Let's hope so. Keep us members of this Forum informed as to how you fare. Thanks and good luck!
